Fastmail in 2026 is excellent email infrastructure: fast search, real aliases, Masked Email, server-side rules, and the open standards it helped write. It is deliberately not an AI assistant. It is right for people who want a fast, private, standards-based mailbox they control, and wrong for anyone who needs end-to-end encryption or automation built in.

Most reviews of Fastmail score it on a feature grid and land somewhere near "solid, slightly boring." That misses the thing actually worth knowing. This Fastmail review treats it as infrastructure — the layer underneath your email rather than the layer on top of it — because that is what it is built to be.

Read it that way and the praise and the criticism turn out to be the same fact. Fastmail is fast because its servers can read your mail in the clear. That single architectural choice explains the search, the server-side rules, the spam filtering, and the one absence people hold against it.

Everything below was checked against Fastmail's own live pages in August 2026. Capabilities change; verify anything you are about to pay for on the vendor's own site.

The short answer#

Fastmail is a paid, independent mailbox host that does the unglamorous parts of email very well and refuses to do the fashionable parts at all. There is no chatbot in the inbox and no model summarising your mail in the background — Fastmail says so directly, in those words.

It is the right provider for a specific reader, and a poor fit for two others.

  • Right for you if: you want a fast mailbox on your own domain, real aliases, per-signup masked addresses, and rules that run on the server whether or not an app is open.
  • Right for you if: you are leaving Gmail over ad-adjacent data handling but do not need cryptography to solve it.
  • Wrong for you if: your requirement is end-to-end encryption. Fastmail does not offer it in its own apps and is open about why.
  • Wrong for you if: you expected the provider itself to triage, draft, or summarise. That is not a gap Fastmail is trying to close.

The criteria that actually matter for a mail provider#

Feature checklists reward whoever ships the most toggles. A mail provider is worth judging on six things, because these are the ones you cannot swap out later without moving your address.

Note what is missing from this list: an assistant. You can change the client sitting on top of a mailbox any time. You cannot cheaply change who holds the mailbox.

  • Retrieval — can you find a message from three years ago in under five seconds, including inside attachments?
  • Identity control — aliases, custom domains, and disposable addresses that you own rather than rent from a third party.
  • Automation that survives you — rules that run at delivery time, not rules that run when your laptop is awake.
  • Standards — can you leave? IMAP, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV, and a real export.
  • Threat model honesty — what the provider can read, where it is stored, and whether they say so plainly.
  • Durability — is the company independent, funded by subscriptions, and likely to still be here in five years?

How good is Fastmail search and speed?#

Search is the strongest thing Fastmail sells, and it is not a marketing claim you have to take on faith. Its own feature page commits to searching by word, phrase and sender, to surfacing matches inside attachments, and to supporting Gmail's search syntax "and more besides."

The parts that matter in daily use are less obvious. There is a search builder for people who do not memorise operators, one-click exclusion of a sender or folder that is flooding results, and saved searches pinned to the sidebar so a recurring query becomes a permanent view.

The best detail is the bridge from search to automation: select every message a search matched and act on all of them, or convert that same search into a rule that handles matching mail from then on. That is the loop most clients make you do in two disconnected places.

Speed comes from the same place. The index is built server-side over readable message content, so retrieval does not depend on what your device has cached.

The trade-off underneath the speed#

Fastmail does not offer end-to-end encryption in its own apps, and it has published its reasoning rather than staying quiet about it. The argument is worth reading before you treat the absence as laziness.

Their stated case runs in three parts. Key exchange only works if both ends support it. Encryption performed in webmail buys little against a compromised server, because the decrypting code is served by that same server. And if the server cannot read the message, it cannot give you fast full-text search, inbox previews, or content-based spam filtering — and cannot help you recover anything if you lose your key.

You do not have to agree with that trade to respect that it is stated. Fastmail supports PGP and S/MIME through third-party apps for people who want it, without pretending webmail encryption is the same thing.

If end-to-end encryption is a hard requirement, stop here

Fastmail is the wrong shortlist. Proton Mail is the well-known option built around that threat model, and it accepts the corresponding costs in search and interoperability. Choose the threat model first, then choose the provider — doing it the other way round is how people end up unhappy with both.

Fastmail Masked Email and alias handling#

This is the feature most people actually switch for, and the two halves of it get confused constantly. Aliases and Masked Email solve different problems.

An alias is an address you choose and intend to keep: your name on your own domain, a role address, a second identity you send from. Fastmail treats those as durable. Business accounts can also add shared addresses such as sales@ or support@ that more than one person works out of, at no extra cost.

Masked Email is the opposite by design. Fastmail generates a random address for a single signup, labels it in your client with the site it was created for, and lets you switch it off the moment that site starts selling your attention. Because each site gets a different address, no two of them can correlate you.

The integration is the part that makes it stick. Fastmail connects to 1Password and Bitwarden, so a masked address gets created inside the signup flow rather than as a separate chore you skip on the third site.

Does Fastmail have AI features?#

This is where most Fastmail reviews are now out of date. The old answer — "no AI, they are not interested" — was true and is no longer complete.

Fastmail's position on assistants has not changed. It states plainly that it has not integrated AI into the product: no chatbot attached to the inbox, and no model processing your mail in the background. That is a deliberate product boundary, not a roadmap gap.

What changed is the connector. On 22 April 2026 Fastmail shipped an MCP server at api.fastmail.com/mcp — an endpoint that lets an AI client you choose talk to your mailbox, authorised through an OAuth consent screen with three separate permission levels: read-only, write, and send. Nothing is enabled unless you connect something.

That is a genuinely different answer from the rest of the category. Where other providers bolt an assistant into the inbox and ask you to trust it, Fastmail treats AI access as another open protocol alongside IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV — the same instinct that led it to help develop JMAP. The upside is that you pick the assistant and can revoke it. The cost is that you supply it, and Fastmail ships you nothing on day one.

Worked example: a three-person studio leaving Gmail#

Abstract criteria are easy to nod along to, so here is the decision applied to a real shape: a design studio of three, one shared domain, mail currently on free Gmail accounts with the domain pointed at one of them.

Their actual problems are that client mail arrives at whichever personal address a client happened to have, nobody can find last year's contract, and one founder's inbox has become the studio's single point of failure.

    Map addresses before you move anything

    Three named addresses on the domain, plus shared hello@ and invoices@ that all three can work out of. This is the fix for the single-point-of-failure problem, and it is a packaging decision rather than a technical one.

    Migrate mail, calendars and contacts together

    Fastmail advertises migration from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Proton and HEY. Move one account first and live in it for a week before moving the other two — a rollback with one person inconvenienced is cheap.

    Rebuild filing as server-side rules, not client filters

    Anything that was a Gmail filter becomes a rule that runs before delivery. Build the common cases in the rules UI and leave Sieve alone unless you genuinely need time-based logic.

    Put Masked Email in the signup habit

    Connect 1Password or Bitwarden so every new vendor, trial and newsletter gets its own address. Twelve months later, the one that starts spamming is switched off in a click instead of filtered forever.

    Search for a contract you remember, including an attachment-only phrase. If that returns in seconds on day one, the migration solved the second problem too.

Check current packaging yourself

Fastmail is paid-only — there is no permanent free tier — with a free trial, individual and business tiers, and business plans billed per user per month on monthly or multi-year terms. Prices and tier contents change, so confirm on Fastmail's own pricing page before you budget.

Red flags and real weaknesses#

Nothing here is disqualifying on its own. Each one is disqualifying for somebody, which is the only useful way to write this section.

No end-to-end encryption in Fastmail's own apps. Covered above, and it is a design choice rather than an oversight — but if your compliance officer asked for it, the answer is no.

Jurisdiction is split and worth understanding. Servers sit in the United States (Philadelphia and St. Louis) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam), with a choice of EU or USA as your primary data residency, while the operating entity is Fastmail Pty Ltd, an Australian company. Whether that combination suits you is a legal question, not a technical one, and it deserves ten minutes rather than a shrug.

The business tier is small-business shaped. Admin controls, shared addresses and centralised billing are there. SSO, retention policy and e-discovery are not things Fastmail advertises, and a regulated team should confirm rather than assume.

Sieve is genuinely sharp. Fastmail's own documentation says it suits users with high technical ability and can permanently delete or alter messages with no undo. Powerful and unforgiving are the same sentence here.

And the obvious one: if you wanted the provider to do the reading and writing for you, Fastmail has told you it will not. That is honest, and it is still a no.

What we'd pick and why (honest)#

If what you need is a mailbox, Fastmail is the pick. It is fast, independent, funded by subscriptions rather than attention, and unusually straight about its own trade-offs. For a standards-minded individual or a small team on a custom domain, it is one of the few providers where the marketing and the documentation say the same thing.

If you need end-to-end encryption, we would send you to Proton Mail instead, and accept the slower search and rougher interoperability that come with it. Fastmail does not compete there and does not claim to.

There is a third case, and it is the one the first two answers do not cover: your infrastructure is already fine and the volume is the problem. Two hundred messages a day is not a provider failure — no mailbox host fixes it, because triage and drafting happen in the client, not on the mail server.
