lemlist vs Instantly for Cold Email: Personalisation or Volume?

Split illustration comparing lemlist vs Instantly for cold email — one side showing personalised multichannel touchpoints, the other showing many mailboxes sending at volume

The short answer

Neither wins outright. Choose lemlist if replies depend on deep personalisation and multichannel steps — LinkedIn, calls, SMS, WhatsApp — from one sequence. Choose Instantly if you are sending high email volume across many mailboxes and deliverability is the constraint. lemlist prices multichannel per user; Instantly is email-first with volume-tiered plans.

lemlist vs Instantly for cold email: lemlist wins on personalisation and channels, Instantly on volume and deliverability. Checked September 2026.

The lemlist vs Instantly for cold email question usually gets answered with a feature checklist, which is the least useful way to answer it. The two platforms are built around different bets about why cold email fails.

lemlist bets that it fails because the message is generic, so it invests in personalisation and in channels beyond email. Instantly bets that it fails because the message never reached the inbox, so it invests in warm-up, mailbox supply and send volume.

Both bets are reasonable, and which one is right depends on your list size and who is on it. Everything below was checked against each vendor's own live pages on 23 September 2026 — this category changes packaging often, so verify before you buy.

The verdict up front#

If your list is small, expensive and human — a few hundred named accounts where one reply is worth four figures — lemlist is the better platform. Its whole design assumes a human will look at each sequence and that the sequence will touch more than one channel.

If your list is large and you are optimising the percentage that lands in a primary inbox, Instantly is the better platform. It treats mailboxes as infrastructure to be supplied, warmed and rotated, and it sells that infrastructure directly.

The honest complication is that these are not opposites so much as opposite ends of one trade. Heavy personalisation does not scale linearly: every dynamic image, custom landing page and LinkedIn voice note is work someone has to do or approve, which caps how many prospects a rep can actually run.

  • Pick lemlist for: multichannel sequences, personalisation depth, small-to-mid lists, teams that sell by relationship.
  • Pick Instantly for: email-only sending at volume, many mailboxes, deliverability as the primary constraint, agencies running several client sending estates.
  • Pick neither for: newsletters, transactional mail, or triaging the replies once they arrive — those are different tools.

lemlist vs Instantly at a glance#

This table records what each vendor's own pages stated on 23 September 2026. Where a page did not document a capability, the cell says so rather than guessing — an undocumented feature is not the same as a missing one.

Where lemlist wins#

Channel breadth is the clearest win, and it is not close. lemlist sequences can mix email, LinkedIn profile visits, connection requests, text and voice messages, phone calls, SMS and WhatsApp, with manual-task reminders for the steps a human should do by hand.

The second win is personalisation depth. lemlist's own help centre keeps a collection called Email Personalization covering custom variables, dynamic images and AI-assisted content, and its multichannel page describes adapting "email copies, graphics, and even landing pages" per lead.

A third, quieter win is branching. lemlist calls it advanced conditions: the sequence changes shape based on what the lead did, so a no-reply can route to a call step rather than another email. That is the difference between a sequence and a queue.

  • LinkedIn voice notes can be recorded once and, per lemlist, cloned and personalised per lead at scale.
  • Calling works through a native dialer or by connecting Aircall or Ringover.
  • lemlist states LinkedIn steps work with a free LinkedIn account — Sales Navigator is not required.
  • LinkedIn and call steps sit on the Multichannel plan or above, not on the entry Email plan.

Where Instantly wins#

Instantly wins on sending infrastructure, and it wins by selling the parts other tools assume you already have. Its Email Accounts product provisions deliverability-configured Google mailboxes with MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records set up for you, delivered within 24–72 hours.

That matters more than it sounds. The slowest part of standing up a cold-email programme is rarely the copy — it is buying domains, provisioning mailboxes, getting DNS right and waiting out warm-up. Instantly compresses that into an order form.

Its warm-up is also more specified than most. The page describes a slow ramp starting at two emails on day one, randomised daily volume, and headless browsers that open and scroll warm-up mail to emulate human reading, against a claimed pool of over a million real accounts.

  • Unlimited email accounts and unlimited warm-up appear on the Outreach tiers, with the monthly send volume as the metered dimension instead.
  • Unibox consolidates replies from every connected mailbox into one view.
  • Instantly ships its own CRM, a verification product and a website-visitors product alongside sending.
  • A managed VIP service exists for teams that want the estate run for them.
Abstract illustration of two options being weighed — personalisation depth on one side, sending volume and mailbox supply on the other
The trade is real: the work that makes a message personal is the same work that caps how many you can send.

Does personalisation actually improve cold email replies?#

Yes, but not in the way the feature names imply, and you should be sceptical of any vendor lift figure — including the ones on these two sites. Reply-rate claims in this category come from the vendor's own customer base, which is self-selected, and none of them control for list quality.

What is defensible is the mechanism. A message that references something only true of the recipient cannot have been sent to ten thousand people, and both the human reading it and the filter scoring it can tell. That is why personalisation helps, and it is also why merge-tag personalisation — first name, company name — helps far less than it used to.

The practical test is whether the personalised element would survive being read aloud. "I saw you're hiring three SDRs in Lisbon" survives. A dynamic image with the prospect's logo pasted onto a coffee cup usually does not, and it costs you the image-blocking and spam-scoring risk on top.

Treat database-size claims as marketing, not a spec

On 23 September 2026 lemlist's homepage showed both "650M+ Lead Database" in its navigation and "600M+ lemlist database" in the body copy. Instantly's homepage names a B2B Lead Finder without stating a count. Neither number tells you coverage in your specific segment — run the same twenty target accounts through both trials and compare hit rate and bounce rate instead.

Sending volume limits: what each platform actually caps#

This is where the two pricing models diverge most, and it is the thing to check before you compare anything else. lemlist's Email plan is sold against a monthly email volume with unlimited users and senders; its Multichannel plan is sold per user and includes five senders per user, with Enterprise going above that.

Instantly inverts it. The Outreach tiers advertise unlimited email accounts and unlimited warm-up, and meter the monthly send instead — entry tiers sit around 5,000 emails a month and the top tier ran to 500,000 on the pricing page as at 23 September 2026.

Neither cap is the real limit. The real limit is what each mailbox can send per day before the receiving side starts treating the domain as a bulk sender, and that number is set by Google and Microsoft, not by your outreach tool.

What is meteredlemlistInstantly
SeatsUnlimited on the Email plan; per-user on MultichannelTeam members included on the Outreach tiers
Sending mailboxesUnlimited senders on Email; 5 per user on Multichannel; more on EnterpriseAdvertised as unlimited on the Outreach tiers
Monthly send volumeThe Email plan's priced dimension; Multichannel states unlimited emails and messagesThe metered dimension across tiers, roughly 5,000 up to 500,000 per month
Lead dataSeparate credit-based Data add-ons; credits roll over while the subscription is activeSeparate credit bundles, also purchasable standalone
Per-mailbox daily limitDocumented in the help centre; set by you and by the mail providerSet by you and by the mail provider

The receiving side sets the real ceiling

Google counts bulk-sender status per primary domain, aggregating subdomains, at roughly 5,000 messages a day to personal Gmail addresses — and once triggered it is permanent. Keep the spam rate below 0.1% and never let it reach 0.3%. Microsoft runs a separate Outlook.com regime requiring SPF, DKIM and DMARC above 5,000 a day, live since 5 May 2025, and returns 550 5.7.515 for non-compliant bulk mail. One-click unsubscribe (RFC 8058) is required for marketing mail. No outreach tool exempts you from any of this.

Pricing model: shapes, not numbers#

We do not publish competitor prices here, because both vendors change them and a stale number in a comparison post is worse than no number. What is stable enough to plan around is the shape of each model.

lemlist splits into Engagement plans and Data plans. Engagement is Email, Multichannel and Enterprise; Data is enrichment and buying-intent signals sold as credits you can buy with or without an Engagement plan, charged only on successful results and rolling over while the subscription is live.

Instantly splits further: bundles, standalone Outreach tiers, standalone Credits, and a managed service. That gives more ways to buy only what you need, and more ways to discover at renewal that you are paying for three product lines rather than one.

Verify pricing on each vendor's own page

Everything here was read from lemlist.com and instantly.ai on 23 September 2026. Tier names, caps and credit definitions in this category change several times a year — lemlist's own product pages still referred to a "Multichannel Expert" plan on that date while its pricing page listed "Multichannel". Price the plan on the vendor's live pricing page before you commit, and confirm what one credit buys.

Which cold email tool is easier to set up?#

Instantly, if you are starting from nothing. Ordering pre-configured mailboxes removes the step that most often stalls a first campaign, and the warm-up is a single toggle after connection.

lemlist, if you already have mailboxes and domains that work. Connecting an existing provider over SMTP and IMAP is well documented, lemwarm comes with the seat, and you are then straight into building the sequence.

The setup that takes longest on either platform is the part neither sells: writing something worth replying to, and deciding what happens when someone does reply. Budget more time for those than for the software.

  • Both document SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup — do this before the first send, not after the first bounce report.
  • Warm up new domains and mailboxes for weeks, not days, whatever the ramp schedule says.
  • Decide the reply workflow up front: a unified inbox collects replies, it does not answer them.
Decision fork illustration: one path leads to personalised multichannel sequences, the other to high-volume email sending across many mailboxes
The fork is list size and deal value, not feature count.

A third option, honestly: where AI Emaily fits#

We build AI Emaily, and we are not a cold-outbound platform. We do not sell sequences, we do not sell mailbox supply, we do not warm domains, and if you came here to send cold email at volume, one of the two tools above is your answer and not us.

Where we fit is the other half of the same workflow: the mail that arrives. A working outbound programme generates replies, out-of-offices, referrals to a colleague and a steady flow of other people's cold email hitting the same inbox — and the sending platform's unified inbox collects all of that without sorting it.

AI Emaily is an AI-native email client for that side. Its cold-email filter keeps unsolicited outreach out of your own inbox by matching sender behaviour and domain rather than a single address, so a rotation does not reset it. Its drafting works from a Personal Context brain and per-client profiles you set, not from scraping your sent mail, and every send waits for your approval in Copilot mode with an undo and an audit trail behind it.

The limit, stated plainly: we will not replace lemlist or Instantly for outbound. Run the sequence there, and use us for triage, follow-up tracking and replies across Gmail, Outlook and IMAP. AI Emaily is a 7-day free trial on Pro and Autopilot — card required, nothing charged if you cancel before day seven.
