The short answer

Shortwave vs Missive for a startup team comes down to shape: pick Shortwave if you all live in Gmail and want the strongest AI on individual mail; pick Missive if you answer as one address, co-draft in real time, or handle SMS, WhatsApp and Instagram alongside email. A support-shaped team should buy Missive.

Shortwave vs Missive for startup teams: Shortwave for AI on Gmail, Missive for a real shared inbox. Who each fits, and where AI Emaily lands.

Shortwave vs Missive for startup teams is a question that only looks like a like-for-like comparison. The two products sit on opposite sides of one decision — is your team an AI layer on top of individual Gmail inboxes, or a group of people answering the same conversations together? Answer that first and most of the rest is bookkeeping.

This post is a straight head-to-head. We build AI Emaily, an AI-native email client — it gets one short, honest section near the end and no more. The main event is Shortwave versus Missive on their own terms, on a startup that is somewhere between three and fifteen people.

Both vendors moved features around in the last year. Every claim below is checked against each company's own live product and pricing pages as of August 2026 — treat those pages as the source on the day you actually buy.

The verdict, up front#

If your whole startup is on Google Workspace and the daily bottleneck is how quickly each person moves through their own mail, Shortwave is the better fit. The AI is the point of the product — semantic search that finds a thread by what it was about, an assistant that drafts against Gmail history, filters and a chief-of-staff-style agent that runs on Gmail directly. For a founder plus a couple of engineers plus one operator, that reads as leverage from day one.

If your startup is answering as an address rather than as people — support@, sales@, hello@ — or if two teammates need to write the same reply at the same time, Missive wins outright. It is a genuine shared inbox: assignments with owners and internal statuses, in-thread comments and @mentions, live cursors on the same draft, and email plus SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and live chat in one workspace. Shortwave collaborates around threads. Missive collaborates inside them.

The support-shaped team should buy Missive, and it isn't close. A startup that already runs its help queue, its sales replies and its founder outreach out of one shared address will hit the ceiling on Shortwave's team features within a quarter — assignment as a real object with a state is not the shape Shortwave is built for. If any part of your stack is on Microsoft 365 or Exchange, the decision is also made for you: Shortwave requires a Google account per seat, Missive does not.

Feature parity between the two is high on the surface, which is what makes most comparison pages generic. The table below is only the dimensions where the products behave differently, and each cell reflects what the vendor documents on its own site as of August 2026.

Where Shortwave wins#

The AI, and it is not a small win. Shortwave was built as an AI-native Gmail client by ex-Google engineers and the product is arranged around that from the first minute. Natural-language search reaches your Gmail history and returns the thread you were describing rather than a list of keyword hits. An in-thread assistant summarises long chains, drafts replies against the history it can see, and answers questions about your mail. AI filters and the agent extend the same model to triage. For a startup where the founder is the bottleneck on every reply, that is real leverage per seat.

Gmail-native shared workflows for a Google Workspace team. Shortwave documents assignees with done statuses on shared labels, team comments on threads, and channels — enough coordination for a small Gmail-only team without pretending to be a help desk. Assigned threads change state when they are done, so a hiring loop or a customer escalation has an owner and everyone can see it is closed.

Institutional memory that survives the founder. Because the AI operates over shared labels and threads the seat can see, "the last time we discussed the pricing exception for Acme" finds the actual conversation regardless of who was on it. In a startup that will double headcount in a year, that is what turns the founder's inbox into a team asset instead of a person-shaped bottleneck.

The concession the other way: Missive has built harder on a genuine shared-inbox shape and on multi-channel messaging than Shortwave has. If your startup needs one address answered by three people, or if the customer sometimes reaches you on WhatsApp instead of email, Shortwave will not close that gap by shipping another AI feature.

A branching diagram with one path labelled AI on individual Gmail leading to a mailbox with an AI-drafted reply, and another path labelled shared work leading to a support@ inbox with an assignment badge, in-thread comments and live cursors
The fork decides the purchase. AI on individual Gmail sends you to Shortwave; a group answering one address sends you to Missive.

Where Missive wins outright#

The shared inbox itself. Missive lets a group work out of one address — support@, sales@, hello@ — with two-way sync back to the underlying Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, Microsoft 365 or IMAP mailbox. Everyone on the team sees the same threads at the same time, without forwarding, CC'ing or password sharing. Shortwave is one seat per one Google account with sharing layered on top; that is a category difference, not a feature gap.

Real-time collaborative drafting. Two teammates can open the same draft and edit it together, with live cursors, the way two people edit a shared document. For a startup where the founder wants a second pair of eyes on the reply to an investor or a first customer, this is what makes co-writing actually happen instead of a Slack thread trading paragraphs.

In-thread chat and @mentions. Missive puts comments visible only to the team inside every conversation, next to the customer-facing messages. The context stays attached to the mail rather than getting scattered across Slack and screenshots, and a new hire onboarding onto an old thread can read what the team decided at the time.

Assignment with a real owner and state. Missive supports assigning a conversation to a named teammate and moving it through internal statuses. Coupled with rules that route by content, this covers the shape of a small support desk without buying one. Shortwave has assignees on shared labels, but the ceiling on rule-driven routing and state is lower.

Non-email channels in the same inbox. Missive documents SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and live chat inside the same workspace as email. For a consumer-facing startup where the customer picks the channel, this decides the purchase — Shortwave is email-only and has no roadmap public for adding messaging surfaces.

Provider coverage. Missive supports Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, Microsoft 365 and standard IMAP natively. If your startup has sales on Google and finance on Microsoft, or if a recent hire brought a Fastmail account with them, Missive absorbs that on day one. Shortwave requires a Google account for every seat and states so in its own docs — other providers work only via forwarding into a Gmail account.

The concession the other way: Shortwave's AI is meaningfully stronger than Missive's on individual Gmail. Natural-language search, an in-thread assistant and the agent are the point of Shortwave; on Missive they are useful additions to a collaboration product. If AI on your own mail is the reason you are buying anything at all, Missive is not the answer.

Pricing model — shape, not numbers#

We quote no figures for either product on purpose. Both restructured tiers within the last year and any table with numbers in it has a decent chance of being wrong before this post is a quarter old. What is structural, and what you can compare, is the shape.

Shortwave is per-seat across three paid tiers — Business, Premier and Max — after a 14-day trial, and it meters the AI itself by tier. Daily AI request allowance, the number of threads considered per AI search, the history window the assistant reaches back through, and the count of AI filters all rise with the tier. Growing up the ladder mostly buys more AI capacity, and the people writing more mail are the ones who push you up.

Missive is also per-seat, with a free plan a small team can genuinely run on for a while and three paid tiers above it — Starter, Productive and Business as the current names. Automation-rule counts, integration count, history depth and the AI-drafting layer expand as you climb. There is no separate omnichannel gate — SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger sit inside the same product on paid tiers rather than in an add-on.

For a startup, the practical difference is where the ceiling sits and what growth costs. On Shortwave, more seats cost more per seat and heavy AI users push the whole team up a tier. On Missive, more seats cost more per seat and richer automation, more integrations and deeper history push you up. Model both against your headcount and volume plan for the next twelve months before you sign a year.

Verify current plan contents on each vendor's own page

Both products moved AI, admin and team features between tiers in the last year. Check shortwave.com/pricing and missiveapp.com/pricing on the day you buy. A summary written even a month ago — including this one — may already be wrong on which tier includes what.

Who each one is genuinely for#

Strip out the branding and it comes down to your providers, whether the work is individual or shared, and whether AI on your own mail or one address answered by a group is doing the actual heavy lifting.

If this is your startupPickWhy
Three to eight people, all on Google Workspace, mostly answering their own mailShortwaveAI-first on Gmail per seat, plus enough shared labels and assignment for light coordination

Startup that will double headcount and needs the archive to stay searchable across the teamShortwaveSemantic search across shared labels turns the founder's inbox into a team asset
Small agency where account managers own clients but the team pitches in on hard threadsMissiveAssignment plus in-thread comments cover the pitch-in shape without breaking ownership

A third option, honestly#

We build AI Emaily, an AI-native email client. This post is Shortwave versus Missive and it stays that way — one short section, plainly labelled, so you know what you are reading. Full details live on the AI Emaily homepage at aiemaily.com and on the pricing page linked below.

The gap AI Emaily aims at is individual-mailbox coverage across providers, plus control over what an agent may do on your behalf. It connects Gmail, Outlook and standard IMAP in one inbox — no forwarding, no Google-only tax — and every seat runs in one of three authority modes. In Manual you drive; in Copilot the agent drafts and files but nothing sends without your approval; Autopilot is gated for the actions you allow. Every agent action is undoable and written to an audit log an admin can read. Drafts come from a user-set Personal Context and per-client profiles, not from a model trawling your archive, and we do not train on user mail. Packaging is a 7-day free trial on Pro or Autopilot (card required, $0 if cancelled before day 7) — there is no permanent free tier.

Where the two products above are ahead, they are ahead. Shortwave has built harder on Gmail-native AI search than we have — natural-language recall across a team's Gmail history is its signature and it is a genuinely stronger experience than ours on that specific axis. Missive is a real shared inbox with concurrent drafting, in-thread chat, assignment queues, two-way sync and multi-channel messaging — we are not that product and pretending otherwise would hurt you at ten seats. Our honest limits for a startup:

  • We are not a shared inbox with one address staffed by a group. For that job, buy Missive or Front; this post is not selling around them.
  • We do not ship SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger channels inside the client. Email only.
  • macOS and Windows ship as downloadable desktop apps built as an Electron shell around the web interface, not native binaries. The Mac build is Apple Silicon only and is not in the Mac App Store.
  • iOS is a native App Store app. Android is a PWA today, with a native app on the roadmap rather than shipped. Linux is web only.
  • Offline is partial by design across surfaces — read and draft offline, but this is not a cached-mode client with a complete local archive.

The call#

If every seat is on Google Workspace and the daily pain is per-person throughput on individual mail, Shortwave. If the pain is one address answered by a group, two people writing one reply together, non-email channels the customer picks, or any Microsoft account in the stack, Missive. A support-shaped startup should buy Missive; an AI-shaped, Gmail-only, individual-mail startup should buy Shortwave.

Then run both trials on the same real team, in the same week, on real mail. Two weeks of your actual threads, one hiring loop and one customer escalation settles this faster than any comparison, including this one.
