The best email client for a professor is not judged on generic inbox features. It is judged on whether it protects two things at once: a research block that the next "quick question" email will destroy, and a duty of care to students who deserve a real answer to the message they sent at 11pm the night before an assignment is due.
Most academic email advice fails on that split. The canonical suggestion is to "batch" — check mail twice a day, keep replies short, use canned responses. The trade-off is category coverage. Shortwave does not connect to Microsoft 365 Education, so if your university runs Outlook this is not a candidate. Superhuman Mail is the pick for a professor who lives in the keyboard, wants an inbox they can drain during the fifteen minutes between a lecture and an office hour, and is willing to pay for speed on a personal account. Snooze, split inbox, reminders and instant search are excellent; the AI features (triage suggestions, reply drafting) that shipped in 2024 and 2025 are quick and solid. University-account fit is a real question. Superhuman connects to Gmail and personal Outlook; on a school tenant, the same OAuth approval applies. Per-seat cost scales quickly if you were hoping to standardise a research group or a co-teaching team on it.
6. Fyxer — an overlay when your university has locked the client#
Fyxer is not a mail client. It is an AI overlay that layers triage, drafting and meeting-note handling on top of the Gmail or Outlook you already run. For a professor whose university has locked the client — you must use the school-issued Outlook and cannot switch — Fyxer adds AI without moving where the mail lives, which is often the only route past a hard IT policy.
