The best email client that blocks tracking pixels is one that blocks remote images by default, strips tracking parameters from links, and does the same thing on your phone as it does on your laptop. Almost every mainstream client does part of this. Very few do all of it, and the ones that do split into two camps: end-to-end encrypted providers that block trackers as part of a broader lockdown, and modern AI-native clients that treat email as untrusted input.
This is a buyer comparison, not a how-to. If you just want the mechanics of stopping pixels in the client you already use, our companion piece covers that. Here we grade eight clients on what they actually do about tracking, and we are honest about the limits: image proxying is not blocking, and no client on this list stops a tracked link you click.
The short answer, and who each client is for#
If the question is which client blocks tracking pixels most effectively, three answers are defensible depending on what else you need. AI Emaily is the pick when you want anti-tracking plus a working assistant across Gmail, Outlook, iCloud and IMAP with approval-before-send. Proton Mail is the pick when your priority is end-to-end encrypted storage and you are willing to live inside a Proton mailbox. Tuta is the pick if you want the same encrypted, tracker-blocking posture on a stricter budget.
For Apple-only users who don't want to think about it, Apple Mail with Mail Privacy Protection turned on gets most of the way there without another app. HEY names and blocks spy pixels as a marketing feature and is a good fit if you also want its curated inbox model. Thunderbird blocks remote content by default and is the honest desktop-first answer for anyone on an IMAP account they don't want to move.

How we compared these clients#
Tracking pixels are the small remote images senders embed to detect when a message is opened. Newsletter platforms, sales-outreach tools, and plenty of ordinary marketing use them. Some also rewrite every link through a tracking domain that logs the click before redirecting you. Blocking the pixel breaks the open beacon; stripping the redirect breaks the click beacon. Doing both is what serious anti-tracking looks like.
We graded each client on four capabilities we can verify against the vendor's own documentation, plus one that decides whether the protection is real in practice: mobile parity.
- Remote images blocked by default. If the client loads remote images on open, the tracking pixel fires. A prompt-to-load posture (or full block for non-contacts) is the baseline for anti-tracking.
- Tracking pixels handled separately. Some clients block or strip 1x1 image beacons even when other remote images are loaded, or route all fetches through a proxy that hides your IP and open time from the sender.
- Link redirect handling. Tracking-heavy senders wrap real destinations in a redirect domain. The strongest clients strip known tracking parameters from URLs and warn on redirect chains; most do neither.
- Mobile parity. A desktop-only protection is half a protection. The client's mobile app has to enforce the same rules; if the phone quietly loads the pixel you carefully blocked at your desk, the sender still knows.
- What the vendor documents publicly. If a capability is not on the vendor's own live page or docs, we say so rather than infer it from a review.

Two things stand out in the table. Every column has at least one client that leaves a gap, and the two clients with the tightest tracker posture — Proton and Tuta — are also the two that require you to move your mail to their infrastructure. That is the trade-off you are actually choosing between.

The eight clients, one by one#
Each write-up below states what the client actually does about tracking, checked against the vendor's documentation or the client's own settings, and where it stops. Where a client does something well, we say so; where it doesn't, we say that too. We do not quote competitor pricing here — packaging changes and the vendor's own page is the current source of truth. Verify capabilities on each vendor's live docs before you commit.
1. AI Emaily — anti-tracking plus an assistant that acts#
AI Emaily blocks remote images by default and treats tracking pixels as untrusted content: they are not fetched on open, and you allow images per sender when you decide the sender is trusted. Links pass through a sandbox that strips known tracking parameters and warns you on click when a URL chain redirects through a tracking domain. The same rules apply on the web, on the downloadable macOS and Windows apps, on iOS, and on the Android PWA — a tracking pixel that is blocked on your desktop is blocked on your phone.
Where AI Emaily adds something the other clients here do not is the layer above the pixel. Bulk senders and cold outreach are the biggest source of tracked mail, and the cold-email filter routes them out of the main inbox before an image would even be loaded. When the assistant drafts a reply, it treats the sender's message body as data rather than instructions, so a hidden "forward this to a third party" line inside a marketing email doesn't act on your behalf. Message bodies live in encrypted storage, OAuth credentials are envelope-encrypted, and the agent asks before it sends.
Where we are honest about the limit: our stored mail is encrypted at rest but not end-to-end in the Proton sense — a court order or a compromised operator is a different threat than a marketing pixel, and if that is your threat model, Proton or Tuta is the right pick and we say so below. 2. Proton Mail — encrypted storage with tracker blocking on top#
Proton Mail blocks remote content by default and, when you do load an image, routes it through Proton's own proxy so the sender does not learn your IP or your exact open time. Its Enhanced tracking protection strips tracking parameters (utm_source, fbclid and similar) from URLs before you click, so the redirect beacon breaks even when you follow the link. The mobile apps enforce the same rules; parity is not a rounding error.
The reason to pick Proton over an AI-native client is not tracker blocking specifically — it is that Proton's mail is end-to-end encrypted at rest under zero-access encryption, so the tracker posture sits inside a broader lockdown. That is the strongest posture in the category, and if that is your bar, Proton is the answer.
The trade-off is that you have to move your mail to Proton to get it. Proton is not a client you point at your existing Gmail or Outlook, and its assistant, Scribe, is deliberately narrower than a full AI email agent. It writes drafts; it does not triage bulk mail or run autonomously.
3. Tuta — the strict-budget encrypted pick#
Tuta (formerly Tutanota) blocks external images by default and does not fetch them until you explicitly allow the sender. Tracking pixels never fire on open. Links open with an external-link warning that shows you the full destination, so a redirect chain is at least visible even though Tuta does not auto-strip tracking parameters the way Proton does.
Like Proton, Tuta is a full stack: encrypted storage, encrypted address book, encrypted calendar. The apps on desktop and mobile behave identically. The reason to prefer Tuta over Proton usually comes down to packaging and jurisdictional preference rather than tracker posture, and reading both providers' current plans is the honest way to compare.
The same caveat applies: Tuta is a mailbox provider, not a client you attach to an existing Gmail. If you cannot move your mail off your current provider, Tuta is not an option, and one of the client-side entries on this list is what you actually need.
4. Apple Mail with Mail Privacy Protection#
Apple Mail is the default answer for Apple-only users who want anti-tracking without setup. Mail Privacy Protection, offered on first open of the Mail app on iOS 15 and macOS Monterey and later, preloads remote content in the background through Apple's proxy and reports a masked IP to the sender. From the sender's dashboard, opens look the same for every recipient at the same time, from an Apple relay. That breaks the timing signal and the IP signal that senders rely on.
It does not, strictly, block the pixel — the image is fetched. That fetch happens on Apple's infrastructure, not yours, and it happens for essentially every message in the background, so open beacons become noise rather than truth. For most tracking purposes, noisy data is useless data, which is why senders adjusted their metrics after MPP shipped.
The two limits worth naming: MPP applies only to the Apple Mail app, not to third-party clients you might install on the same device, and it does not modify links. A tracked URL you click still routes through the sender's redirector. And you have to keep MPP on — the setting is opt-in on first open and can be turned off in the Mail settings.
5. HEY — spy pixels named and shown#
HEY made spy-pixel blocking a marketing feature and delivers on it. Remote images that HEY identifies as tracking pixels are blocked, and the sender is named in the message — you can see that a specific vendor tried to track the open, and HEY shows the block. That transparency is unusual: most clients block silently, so you never learn who was measuring.
The rest of HEY's model is opinionated. The Screener requires you to approve first-time senders before any of their mail reaches you, and the Feed and Paper Trail separate bulk mail from real conversations. Anti-tracking is one part of a curated inbox rather than a standalone feature, so HEY is a good fit if that broader model appeals to you.
The tracker posture is tight, but HEY does not modify links — a tracked redirect you click still calls home — and the client is tied to HEY's own domain or a paid "HEY for Domains" tier. Verify current packaging on the HEY site.
6. Thunderbird — desktop-first, blocked by default#
Thunderbird blocks remote content by default and has since long before anti-tracking was a marketing pitch. Open a marketing email and the images are placeholders until you click the banner to load them; the tracking pixel fires only when you decide it should. That behaviour is a Mozilla-era default, not an AI-era feature, but it works.
The Android app (formerly K-9 Mail, rebranded as Thunderbird for Android) inherits the same posture. iOS Thunderbird is not yet a shipping product as of August 2026 — if that changes, verify on Thunderbird's own release page.
Thunderbird does not strip tracking parameters from URLs and does not do anything with redirect chains beyond letting you preview the destination on hover. And it is not an AI-native client — there is no assistant, no bulk-mail agent, and no cold-email filter. For a desktop-first IMAP user who wants tracker blocking without moving to a hosted provider, that is the point.
7. Fastmail — image control, not tracker stripping#
Fastmail loads remote images by default but exposes a setting to block them, either universally or only for messages from senders outside your contacts. Turn that on and the tracking pixel behaves as it does in Thunderbird: nothing fires until you decide to load images. That is a real control, but it is a control, not a default.
Fastmail's mobile apps carry the same setting. It does not strip tracking parameters from links, and it does not treat tracking pixels differently from other remote images — a decision to load images for a sender loads their pixels too.
Fastmail is best understood as a fast, well-run IMAP-first mailbox provider rather than an anti-tracking product. If you are already on Fastmail and want to tighten tracker exposure, the image setting is the thing to change; if anti-tracking is the primary reason to switch, Proton and Tuta are the stronger targets.
8. Gmail — the baseline anti-tracking clients are measured against#
Gmail loads remote images by default and routes them through Google's own image proxy. That hides your IP and User-Agent from the sender, which is a real privacy win compared to a raw fetch. It does not, however, block the pixel or stop the open event: the sender sees that the message was opened, just not from where. Google sees the fetch, which is a different trust question.
Gmail does not strip tracking parameters from links, does not warn on redirect chains, and does not treat 1x1 tracking pixels differently from any other remote image. The mobile apps behave the same way. There is no per-sender image-blocking toggle in the current web interface; the options are to load images or ask before loading each message.
Gmail is on this list as the baseline because it is the most widely used mailbox in the world, and it is what most senders build their tracking assumptions around. If your existing setup is a stock Gmail, essentially every open is being counted. Moving to a client that blocks by default is the first change that actually changes the sender's data.
How to choose for your situation#
The right answer depends on which of three questions you cannot compromise on. Use the shortest one that fits you.
- If end-to-end encrypted storage is a hard requirement — Proton Mail, or Tuta on a stricter budget. Both block trackers by default and both require moving your mail. This is the strongest posture and it is a real move, not a client swap.
- If you keep Gmail, Outlook, iCloud or IMAP and want tracker blocking plus an assistant that acts — AI Emaily. Blocks images by default, sandboxes links, strips known tracking parameters, holds the assistant to approval-before-send, and applies the same rules on every device. Disclosure: we build it.
- If you live on Apple hardware and want zero setup — Apple Mail with Mail Privacy Protection on. Not a block, but a proxy that turns open data into noise for most tracking purposes, applied to every message automatically. It does not modify links.
- If you want anti-tracking as part of a curated inbox — HEY. Blocks spy pixels and names the sender, and pairs that with a Screener that approves senders in the first place. Verify current packaging on hey.com.
- If you are on desktop IMAP and don't want to move — Thunderbird. Blocks remote content by default, works on Windows, macOS and Linux, and Thunderbird for Android carries the same rules. No AI assistant.
- If you are already on Fastmail — turn the block-images setting on. That closes the biggest gap without changing clients. Anti-tracking is not the reason to switch to Fastmail; it can be adequate once configured.
