The design bet is different from Front's. Missive treats every conversation as something a team can chat about internally in real time — comments live next to the mail thread rather than in a separate ticket system, and assignment, snooze and rule automation sit on top of that. For a team that wants shared-inbox collaboration without the ticket queue metaphor, that is a genuinely different shape from either Hiver or Zendesk.
The trade is the same trade every real-time collaboration tool makes. If half the team is asynchronous and the other half is not, the internal comment stream is either signal or noise depending on who is watching. 4. Loop Email — the Outlook-native add-in for shared inboxes#
If the requirement is 'no new client, no new tab, everything happens where the user already reads mail', Loop Email is the shortest path to it on a Microsoft 365 tenant. It is an Outlook add-in that runs in classic Windows Outlook, new Outlook and Outlook on the web, and it is built specifically for shared-mailbox collaboration inside Microsoft 365.
The ribbon-native shape has real advantages. The add-in can be pushed from the Microsoft 365 admin centre so users never see a marketplace prompt, it inherits the user's Exchange mailbox context without a separate OAuth flow, and assignment and internal comments live inside the Outlook conversation the user is already reading. Nothing about that workflow feels bolted on the way a Gmail-first product retargeted at Outlook can.
What that architecture cannot do, Loop Email is not trying to do. It is Outlook-centric — a team that also runs a Gmail address, or wants the same shared-inbox behaviour on IMAP, is not the target user. And because the surface is the Outlook ribbon, the drafting UI, automation depth and AI features are what fits in an add-in pane rather than what fits in a full-screen inbox platform.
5. Help Scout — helpdesk replacement, mailbox forwarded in#
Help Scout is a different category answer to the same question. Rather than sitting inside Outlook or on top of a shared Outlook mailbox, it replaces the shared-mailbox metaphor with a helpdesk mailbox: mail is forwarded from support@ into Help Scout, agents work tickets there, and replies go out from Help Scout's infrastructure with the customer still seeing your address.
For a Microsoft 365 tenant the connection can be forwarding-based or an OAuth connection to Microsoft 365 for two-way sync. The upside is a purpose-built helpdesk workflow — assignments, workflows, canned replies, reporting — that a general shared inbox does not have. AI features (draft suggestions, summarisation) are packaged as tiered add-ons rather than a separate metered bill.
The trade is that the mailbox stops being 'your Outlook mailbox' in the way Hiver users expect. Agents work inside Help Scout, not inside Outlook, and Exchange-side rules and archives stop being the source of truth. That is either the whole point of moving to Help Scout or the reason not to — depends on whether your team wants a helpdesk or a shared inbox.
6. Zendesk (Support Suite) — the enterprise helpdesk with a real Outlook connector#
Zendesk sits in the same category as Help Scout but scales differently. It supports both classical forwarding from a Microsoft 365 mailbox and, on higher tiers, a native email connector that pulls from Microsoft 365 with OAuth and preserves richer metadata than plain forwarding does.
For teams outgrowing a shared mailbox — where the volume, SLAs and reporting requirements start to look like a real help desk — Zendesk is a legitimate destination, and Microsoft 365 is not a second-class provider on it. Zendesk's AI capability moved to metered per-resolution pricing in the current packaging, which changes the total-cost conversation from 'per seat' to 'per ticket handled by AI' — read the pricing page carefully before you compare it to a per-seat model.
Same caveat as Help Scout, more pronounced. Zendesk is a helpdesk platform, not a shared inbox with automation. If your team wants to keep replying from Outlook with a lighter layer on top, Zendesk is over-scoped. If your team wants a ticket queue, an SLA engine and knowledge base, a shared Outlook mailbox with an AI agent on it is under-scoped.
7. Microsoft 365 shared mailbox + Copilot — the native option#
The one Hiver alternative that is already inside the Microsoft 365 subscription your team pays for. A shared mailbox in Exchange Online is free to create, users are granted Full Access and Send As from the Exchange admin centre, and everyone with access sees the same folder tree inside their own Outlook.
Add Microsoft 365 Copilot on top and you have drafting and summarisation inside the same Outlook the team already opens. It is governed by the same identity, retention and DLP policies as the rest of Microsoft 365, and there is no third-party OAuth prompt for an admin to explain.
The trade is the reason Hiver exists in the first place. A native Exchange shared mailbox does not have per-conversation assignment, internal comment threads, SLA timers, tagging conventions the team can actually enforce, or approval workflows on a reply. Copilot draft suggestions do not fill any of those gaps. If the team's problem is 'we are losing threads and stepping on each other's replies', native is where you started, not where you finish.
What about Gmelius, and about Hiver on Outlook itself?#
Gmelius is on many Hiver-alternative roundups but is Gmail-only — it lives inside Gmail as a Chrome extension and does not support Outlook. On a Microsoft 365 tenant it does not qualify, and recommending it would send readers to a signup that will not connect. Named and set aside.
Hiver itself now has an Outlook standalone app alongside the original Gmail Chrome extension.
