Concept: filter layer versus new client#
The distinction most head-to-heads on these two blur is architectural. SaneBox does its work at the provider — it authenticates against your mailbox and moves messages into folders, and any email client reading that mailbox sees the result. Shortwave does its work inside its own app — it authenticates against Gmail and presents a different reading experience, with sorting, search and rules layered into that experience.

Shortwave's search is the other real strength. The product has invested in semantic search across the Gmail archive, so a question like 'what did the ops team decide about the invoice format last quarter' returns a relevant thread rather than a keyword hit. The catch, which is not small: to get any of this you have to change email clients. On desktop that is a preference. One edge case is worth naming, because both tools handle it awkwardly.
