Shortwave vs Fyxer AI for Gmail triage is a question with a bad information supply. Almost every head-to-head you can find is published by one of the two vendors, or by a third company selling an alternative to both.

So here is a neutral read, judged on what each product actually does to a Gmail inbox: how it decides what matters, where the sorting is visible, where drafts land, what happens when it is wrong, and what the bill does as your volume grows.
The verdict, up front#
Shortwave sorts better. Its AI filters are plain-English rules you write yourself, so important means what you say it means, and its search and agent work across the whole mailbox rather than the last few days.
Fyxer AI sorts adequately without you doing anything, and it does it inside Gmail. Eight fixed categories applied as ordinary Gmail labels, plus drafts that appear where you already read mail.
The tiebreak is not a feature. Shortwave replaces your email client; Fyxer leaves it alone. If you cannot or will not change interface — a company standard, the Gmail app on your phone, a team that would have to follow you — that settles it before dimension one.

Overlay or client: the fork that decides it#
Fyxer AI is an overlay. You connect a Gmail or Outlook account and it works inside the client you already use — labels applied to your mail, drafts written into your threads. Nothing about your interface changes, and nobody else on your team has to change anything either.
Shortwave is a client. You sign in with a Google account and then read your mail in Shortwave's own apps on Mac, Windows, web, iOS and Android. Gmail is still underneath, but you are not looking at it.
That difference decides more than any feature list. An overlay can only work through what Gmail exposes — labels, drafts, archive state. A client can invent things Gmail has no concept of, and Shortwave does: bundles collapse related threads into one inbox row, which Gmail cannot render.
So the first question is not which AI is smarter. It is whether you will leave the Gmail interface.

How each decides what matters#
Fyxer's answer is a fixed taxonomy. It sorts incoming mail into eight categories — To Respond, FYI, Comment, Notification, Meeting Update, Awaiting Reply, Actioned and Marketing — and applies exactly one to each thread, even though Gmail permits several. Its material describes the model as informed by patterns across many inboxes rather than by rules you set.
That works on day one with no configuration, which is why people like it. The cost is that important is defined by the vendor. If your work runs on a category the taxonomy has no name for — inbound candidates, renewals, an escalation path — there is no slot for it.
Shortwave's answer is a rule you write. AI filters are plain-English scripts that can label, star, archive and more, running against arriving mail. A rule such as "if a customer mentions cancelling, star it and label it Escalation" is a filter you write in a minute, not a feature request.
The control is rationed: as of July 2026 the entry tier allows three AI filters, with ten and fifty above it. Rationed control still beats none, which is what a fixed taxonomy gives you.
Winner: Shortwave, for anyone whose inbox does not look like the average inbox. Fyxer AI, for anyone who wants sorting to happen without thinking about it.
Do the labels show up in the Gmail app on your phone?#
This is where the overlay earns its keep, and it is the least discussed dimension in the matchup.
Fyxer's categories are ordinary Gmail labels. They appear in Gmail on the web, in the Gmail app on iOS and Android, and in any other client reading the same account. Nothing has to render them — they are just labels.
Shortwave's labels also sync with Gmail; its documentation says so plainly. But labels are the smallest part of what Shortwave does for triage. Bundles, the split inbox and the results of AI filters live in Shortwave's interface. Open the Gmail app instead and the grouping is gone.
Neither behaviour is a defect — it is what each architecture allows. But if you triage on a phone in the Gmail app, the two products deliver wildly different amounts of value there.

Drafting: where it lands versus how far you can steer it#
This one splits, and the split is worth understanding rather than averaging into a score.
Fyxer drafts replies automatically and puts them where you read mail. You open the thread in Gmail or Outlook, on desktop or phone, and a reply is already there. Fyxer describes it as writing in your tone, learned from your past correspondence. Nothing sends itself.
Shortwave drafts inside Shortwave, with more handles on the output: saved AI instructions, prompt templates, and an agent that pulls context before writing. If you need a renewal reply to read a particular way every time, that is the mechanism that gets you there.
Fyxer wins delivery. A draft you never see is worth nothing, and Fyxer's is in front of you in the app you had open anyway. Shortwave wins control, which matters most on the threads where tone is expensive to get wrong.

What happens when it gets one wrong#
Every triage tool is wrong sometimes. What separates them is whether you can fix the instance, the cause, or neither.
A wrong Fyxer label is easy to fix and hard to prevent. You relabel the thread in Gmail like any other label — one tap on a phone, no product knowledge. What you cannot do is edit the taxonomy; the levers are sender rules and a whitelist so a sender stops landing in Marketing.
A wrong Shortwave filter is the opposite. The action it took is ordinary mailbox state you can reverse, and because the filter is a sentence you wrote, you can open it and change the sentence. Fixing the cause compounds over months in a way that fixing instances never does.
The stakes are not symmetrical across categories. Being filed as FYI when you needed to respond is the failure that costs money, and it is the one to provoke deliberately during a trial.
Test the archive behaviour before you trust it
Cost shape, not prices#
No figures here for either product. Both restructured within the past year, and a price in a blog post ages badly. The shape of the bill is the durable part.
Shortwave meters AI and publishes what it meters: a daily allowance of AI requests, a cap on threads considered per AI search, a history window, a filter count and a context-token multiplier, all rising with tier. As of July 2026 there is no permanent free plan — a 14-day trial, then three paid per-seat tiers. Reviews describing a generous free tier are out of date.
Fyxer bills per seat after a 7-day trial, with the entry tier covering one inbox and calendar, and multiple inboxes plus chat, integrations and file uploads above it. Its enterprise tier carries a fifty-seat minimum.
Then the volume question, which heavy inboxes should care about most. Several third-party pricing write-ups in 2026 describe Fyxer as metering incoming email volume with overage charges above a monthly allotment; Fyxer's own pricing page presents flat per-seat tiers and states no such cap. Those accounts contradict each other, and the ambiguity falls hardest on the people who most need triage.
Ask this in writing before you buy
Continuity: two different kinds of risk#
Both are shipping, sold and supported as of July 2026. Neither is shutting down, and anyone saying otherwise has no source. Two signals still belong in the decision, because switching twice in a year has its own cost.
Shortwave narrowed its free plan, and its founding team also ships a separate general-purpose agent product. Read that as attention spread across two products, not an obituary. Your mail stays in Gmail regardless, so what you would lose is the workflow, not the archive.
Fyxer's risk is structural rather than strategic. An overlay depends on continued access to Gmail's and Outlook's APIs under the platforms' terms, and a fifty-seat enterprise minimum is a company moving upmarket. The same architecture makes leaving trivial: revoke access, delete eight labels, and the mail is where it was.
That asymmetry is worth pricing in. The overlay is the cheaper mistake.
