The short answer#

Yes. As of 2026, Gemini is included in Google Workspace's paid Business and Enterprise plans at no separate add-on charge. Google announced this on 16 January 2025 and rolled it out in stages.

• New customers: bundled pricing took effect from 17 January 2025.
• Existing customers: subscription pricing updated from 17 March 2025, or at the next renewal for annual and fixed-term plans, whichever is later.
• Very small business customers: updated from 7 July 2025.
• Admin console: standalone Gemini add-on references removed from the Subscriptions page starting 25 June 2025, because the AI is now part of the core subscription.

So is it really free?#

No, and this is the part the headline hides. The standalone Gemini add-on is gone, but the base per-seat price of the paid tiers went up when the AI moved in. You are still paying for Gemini. You are just paying for it inside a higher seat price instead of on a separate invoice line.

The saving is real, though. The old add-on cost more per user than the underlying Workspace seat, so anyone who wanted AI roughly doubled that user's bill. Today the seat costs only a little more than the old pre-AI seat, and Gemini comes with it. Google also still offers an optional higher AI-access tier for heavier or more advanced use, which is separate from the Gemini features now bundled into the core seats.

Criteria that actually matter#

Because the AI is now bundled, the old objection — "we already pay extra for AI" — is dead. The live question is what the included AI actually does for you, and whether that matches how you want your inbox handled. Judge any AI-in-email option on these criteria, not on a retired add-on price.

• Included vs metered: is the AI in the seat, or billed on top by usage? A bundled per-seat cost is predictable; usage-metered add-ons are not.
• Assistant vs agent: an assistant drafts, summarizes, and answers questions when you ask, in place. An agent triages, files, drafts across the whole inbox, and takes multi-step action on its own.
• Approve-before-send, undo, audit: the more autonomy a tool has, the more these controls matter. An in-place assistant needs them less; an agent needs them a lot.
• Provider coverage: Gmail only, or Gmail plus Outlook and IMAP? A team on mixed providers cannot standardize on a Gmail-only assistant.
• Data handling: is your mail used to train the model? Confirm this per vendor, bundled or not.
• Cost predictability: a bundled per-seat line is easy to forecast; per-resolution or per-message metering is not.

Red flags to watch for#

Most bad advice on this topic comes from posts that predate the 2025 change or that read the word "included" too literally. Watch for these.

• Reading "included" as "free." The seat price went up when Gemini moved in. You are paying for it, just not on a separate line.
• Assuming every tier gets identical Gemini depth. Capabilities vary by tier, and Google offers an optional higher AI-access tier for heavier or more advanced use. Check what your specific tier includes.
• Assuming "has AI" means "runs my inbox." Gemini in Gmail is an assistant you invoke to draft or summarize. It is not an agent that triages and acts on its own.
• Trusting any figure — including the shape described here — without checking Google's live pricing page. Google changed this model once; treat every number as needing a fresh look.
