The ESP vs SMTP relay difference is really a question about responsibility, not price. An email service provider (ESP) is a full marketing platform: it stores your contact lists, manages consent, builds and hosts your templates, and handles unsubscribes and bounces on your behalf. An SMTP relay — usually sold as a transactional email service or API — does one job: it accepts the mail you hand it and delivers it, and it leaves the list, the consent record, and the compliance work to you.

So the honest way to choose is to ask who you want owning suppression, bounce handling, and unsubscribe compliance: you, or the platform. Send marketing and newsletter campaigns through an ESP. Send app-triggered, one-to-one mail — password resets, receipts, alerts, shipping notices — through an SMTP relay. That single split resolves most of the decision, because the two are built for different jobs and take on different amounts of your compliance work.

The deeper test is responsibility. An ESP is opinionated: it wants to own your list, add an unsubscribe footer, suppress addresses that bounce or complain, and stop you sending to people who opted out. A relay is deliberately unopinionated: it authenticates you, signs and delivers your mail, reports what happened, and assumes your application is the system of record for who may be emailed.

Pick the relay when you have engineers, a database, and you want programmatic control. Pick the ESP when you have marketers, a list, and you want the platform to carry consent, templates and reporting. Where an ESP wins#

An ESP earns its keep when the work around the send matters more than the send itself: building the list, staying compliant, and reporting on campaigns. If you do not have engineers to wire up delivery and suppression, the ESP is doing real labor you would otherwise do by hand.

  • Consent and unsubscribes are handled for you. The platform hosts signup forms, records opt-in, adds the required unsubscribe link, and automatically suppresses anyone who opts out, so you do not email them again by mistake.
  • Bounces and complaints are processed automatically. A hard bounce or a spam complaint removes the address from future campaigns with no code from you, and it shows up in the campaign report.
  • Templates, editor and analytics come built in. Drag-and-drop design, saved templates, and open/click dashboards are part of the product rather than something you assemble.
  • Compliance scaffolding is baked in. A working unsubscribe, a physical mailing address in the footer, and honoring opt-outs are enforced by the platform, which lowers the odds of a CAN-SPAM or GDPR misstep.
  • Deliverability is managed for you. The ESP handles authentication and IP reputation, often across a warmed shared pool, so a small sender inherits an established reputation rather than building one.

Where an SMTP relay wins#

A relay wins when you want to send from your own application, in real time, with full control — and you have the engineering to own the parts the ESP would otherwise carry.

  • Programmatic, real-time sending. Your app calls an API or connects over SMTP the moment an event happens — a signup, a purchase, a password reset — with no campaign to schedule.
  • You keep control of the list and the data. There is no platform trying to own your contacts; the relay sends exactly who your application tells it to, which suits one-to-one transactional mail.
  • Higher throughput and lower per-message cost at volume. Transactional services are built to deliver large numbers of individual messages, and usage-metered pricing usually beats per-contact ESP pricing for high-volume app mail.
  • Dedicated IPs and fine-grained delivery data. Many relays offer a dedicated sending IP and detailed per-message events — delivered, opened, bounced, complained — over webhooks that you feed back into your own systems.
  • It stays out of your way. A relay does not impose templates, a preference center, or a marketing UI; it delivers the mail your code composed and reports what happened.

A relay does not make you compliant

Choosing an SMTP relay does not move legal responsibility onto the provider. Consent, honoring opt-outs, the physical-address requirement for commercial mail, and one-click unsubscribe on marketing or subscribed mail (RFC 8058) stay yours. The relay authenticates and delivers; it does not decide who you are allowed to email. Send marketing through a bare relay and you are rebuilding the ESP's compliance layer yourself.

Pricing model, not prices#

No numbers here, for either category. Email pricing changes often, and any figure a blog prints ages within weeks. The shape of the pricing is durable and worth knowing; the exact figure is not, so verify it on the vendor's own page before you commit.

ESPs almost always bill by list size — the number of contacts you store — sometimes with a monthly send cap on top. Your cost tracks how many people you keep on the list, whether or not you email them, which is why list hygiene shows up directly on the bill.

SMTP relays and transactional services almost always bill by volume — messages sent per month — often with a modest allowance and metered pricing above it. That fits app-triggered mail, where cost should scale with sends rather than with a stored list. A dedicated IP is usually a separate line item.

Because the two meter different things, comparing a per-contact ESP price against a per-message relay price directly is misleading. Estimate your real monthly volume and your real list size, then price each against the job you are actually doing.

Who each is genuinely for#

Feature lists do not settle this. What settles it is what you are sending, who is going to operate it, and how much of the compliance work you want to own.

A third option, honestly#

The two categories are not a clean binary in the market. Many transactional services now sell a marketing product alongside the relay, and many ESPs expose an SMTP or API endpoint for transactional mail. Some vendors, Brevo and SendGrid among them, sit deliberately across the line with both a campaign builder and a transactional API under one account.

For a business that sends both — a newsletter and password resets, a promotion and a receipt — a hybrid platform, or one vendor with both products, keeps authentication, reputation and reporting in one place. The trade is that a do-everything platform is rarely the best at either job compared with a specialist, so weigh convenience against depth.

Self-hosting your own mail server is a third path people reach for to cut cost or keep data in-house. For anything beyond low internal volume it is usually the wrong call: you inherit IP warmup, blocklist monitoring, feedback loops, and the authentication that mailbox providers now require of bulk senders — work a relay or ESP already does. Whichever you pick, the sender rules are the same

Since the Google and Yahoo bulk-sender rules took effect on 1 February 2024, any domain sending roughly 5,000 or more messages a day to personal Gmail accounts must authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, keep its Postmaster Tools spam rate below 0.3% (Google recommends under 0.1%), and offer one-click unsubscribe (RFC 8058) on marketing mail. An ESP handles most of this for you; with a bare relay you configure and monitor it yourself.
