How to Forward iCloud Email to Gmail (and Keep a Copy)

If you want to forward iCloud email to Gmail, the actual steps take about two minutes — once you know the control only lives in one place. That place is icloud.com in a browser. The iOS Settings app, the iPhone Mail app, and the Mac Mail app do not have iCloud's forwarding configuration. That single fact causes more dead ends than the setup itself.

Apple's forwarding is account-wide: everything arriving at your iCloud address and any aliases on the same Apple Account gets copied to the Gmail address you choose. Whether iCloud keeps its own copy alongside the forwarded one is a separate checkbox you decide at setup time. What does iCloud Mail forwarding actually do?#

Forwarding in iCloud Mail is server-side: Apple's mail servers intercept each new message arriving at your iCloud address and send a copy onward to a second address before depositing it in your iCloud inbox. You do not need to be online for this to work. It runs in the background as long as forwarding is enabled.

The keep-a-copy option is a second, independent decision. When you set up forwarding, a checkbox asks whether iCloud should also leave the original in your iCloud inbox. Tick it and both inboxes fill. Leave it unticked and mail arrives only at Gmail — your iCloud inbox stays empty for those messages. Most people want the copy, but the option matters if you are running a deliberate migration and want iCloud to drain entirely into Gmail.

Account-wide forwarding applies to your primary iCloud address and all aliases on the same Apple Account. iCloud does not support forwarding a single alias to a different destination while leaving others in place. What do you need before you start?#

The setup is short, but any of these gaps will stop you partway through.

• An active iCloud email address. Your Apple Account must have iCloud Mail turned on. Addresses end in @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com. If you have never activated iCloud Mail, turn it on in your Apple Account settings first.
• The Gmail address you want to forward to. Double-check the spelling before you type it — a typo sends all forwarded mail to a nonexistent address with no bounce notification.
• A browser on a computer, or a phone with the desktop site mode enabled. Any modern browser on macOS or Windows works directly.
• Your Apple Account password and two-factor authentication access. iCloud.com signs you out on idle, so have these ready.

How do you enable iCloud Mail forwarding to Gmail?#

   Sign in to icloud.com

   Open icloud.com in a browser and sign in with your Apple Account. If two-factor authentication prompts you, approve the notification on a trusted device or enter the six-digit code. On a phone, tap the share icon in Safari and choose Request Desktop Website first — otherwise the Preferences panel may not render correctly.

   Open iCloud Mail

   From the iCloud home screen, click the Mail icon to open your iCloud Mail inbox in the browser.

   In the iCloud Mail web interface, click the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the sidebar, then choose Preferences (some browsers show Settings). The Preferences panel opens as an overlay.

   Click the General tab at the top of the Preferences panel. Scroll down until you see the section labeled Forward my email to — this is where the forwarding control lives.

   Enter your Gmail address and choose the copy option

   Check the Forward my email to checkbox, then type your Gmail address in the field that appears. Directly below it is a second checkbox: Keep copies of forwarded messages on iCloud. Tick this if you want your iCloud inbox to retain a copy while Gmail also receives the message. Leave it unchecked only if you are migrating fully and want iCloud's inbox to stay empty.

   Click Done at the bottom of the Preferences panel. Apple immediately sends a verification email to your Gmail address. Open Gmail, find the message from Apple, and click the confirmation link inside it. Forwarding stays in a pending state until you confirm — no mail is forwarded until the verification is complete.

   Confirm forwarding is active

   Return to icloud.com Mail Preferences, General tab. The forwarding address should now show a status indicating it is active rather than pending. Send a fresh test email to your iCloud address from a third account and check whether it arrives in Gmail within a few minutes.

The verification step is where most setups stall. Apple sends the confirmation to your Gmail inbox, not to iCloud. If you do not see it, check Gmail's spam folder — Apple's automated messages occasionally land there. Click the link directly from the email; do not copy-paste the URL into a different browser tab or session, as Apple ties the confirmation to the originating session.

Forwarding only acts on mail that arrives after you enable and confirm it. Messages already sitting in your iCloud inbox are not forwarded retroactively. If you need to move existing mail to Gmail, you would export it and import it separately — forwarding is a going-forward arrangement only.

   Return to icloud.com Mail Preferences, General tab. If the forwarding address shows pending rather than active, the confirmation email was never clicked. Find it in Gmail's inbox or spam and click the verification link to complete setup.

   Forwarded iCloud mail frequently lands in Gmail's spam. When Apple forwards a message, the sending envelope is rewritten using Apple's forwarding servers. Gmail's SPF and DMARC checks see that the original sender's domain did not authorize Apple to send on its behalf, which raises a spam signal. Open Gmail's spam folder and look for the missing messages there.

   Add a Gmail filter to prevent spam routing

   If you find forwarded iCloud mail in Gmail's spam, create a Gmail filter. In Gmail, go to Settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses > Create a new filter. In the From field enter your iCloud address. Set the action to Never send it to Spam and save. This stops the spam routing for all mail forwarded from that address.

   Send a fresh test email to your iCloud address from a third account right now and wait two to three minutes. Mail that was already in iCloud's inbox before forwarding was enabled is never forwarded — only messages arriving after confirmation are affected.

   If you have any iCloud Mail rules active (icloud.com Mail Preferences > Rules), a rule that deletes or moves messages can intercept them before forwarding runs. iCloud rules process mail before the forwarding step. Review active rules and confirm none of them are eating the messages you expect to see forwarded.

   Verify the Gmail address has no typo

   Return to icloud.com Mail Preferences and confirm the Gmail address shown is spelled exactly right. A single character off routes all forwarded mail to a nonexistent address with no bounce notification. If there is a typo, remove the address, re-enter it correctly, and confirm the new verification email Apple sends.
