How to Create an iCloud Email Alias (and When to)
The short answer

How to create an iCloud email alias is one of those questions that seems obvious until you open the iPhone Settings app and discover the option is not there. Aliases are managed at icloud.com, not from any Apple device's settings screen. Once that is clear, setup takes about two minutes.

The Short Answer#
An iCloud email alias is a secondary @icloud.com address tied to your existing account. Mail sent to the alias arrives in the same inbox as your primary address. Apple allows up to three aliases per Apple ID. You can also send from an alias — the recipient sees the alias address rather than your primary one.
The key constraint is permanence. You can deactivate an alias to stop it from receiving mail, and reactivate it later. But deleting an alias is final: the address is removed from your account and cannot be recreated or claimed by anyone else. If you need a temporary or throwaway address, Apple's Hide My Email is the right tool. An alias is for a stable alternate identity you plan to keep indefinitely.
Before You Start#
Alias creation requires a desktop or laptop browser. The feature is not available in the iPhone or iPad Settings app, in the native Mail app on any Apple device, or in iCloud for Windows. All alias management happens at icloud.com.
Before you open a browser, confirm three things:
- An Apple ID with iCloud Mail active. Sign in at icloud.com and confirm the Mail app appears in the app grid. If you see a prompt to set up iCloud Mail, complete that first.
- A desktop or laptop browser. Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all work. The alias settings panel does not appear in mobile browsers.
- An alias name you want to claim. The name becomes the part before @icloud.com and cannot be changed after creation, so choose carefully.

How to Create an iCloud Email Alias#

Sign in to icloud.com
Go to icloud.com in a desktop browser and sign in with your Apple ID. Complete two-factor authentication if prompted.

Open Mail
On the iCloud home screen, click the Mail icon. iCloud Mail opens in the browser tab.

Open Mail Settings
In the Mail sidebar, click the gear icon at the lower-left corner, then choose Settings from the menu. On some older icloud.com layouts this option is labelled Preferences.

Click the Accounts tab
In the Settings panel, select the Accounts tab. It shows your primary iCloud email address and, below it, an Alias Email Addresses section.

Add an alias
Click Add an Alias. A form appears. Enter the alias name — the portion that will appear before @icloud.com — and an optional label and colour. The label and colour are visible only to you and help you identify which address received a message when all aliases land in the same inbox.

Confirm availability and save
Click OK or Done. Apple checks whether the name is available. If it is taken or reserved, choose a different name. Once confirmed, the alias is active immediately — no email verification step is required.

Send a test message
From another email account, send a message to the new alias address. It should arrive in your iCloud inbox within seconds. If it does not arrive, open icloud.com Mail Settings > Accounts and confirm the alias status reads Active.
Platform Differences#
Alias creation is only available at icloud.com on a desktop browser. Sending from an alias and receiving mail at an alias work across Apple Mail clients, but the steps for switching the From address differ by platform.

What to Do When an iCloud Alias Stops Working#
The most common reason an alias stops receiving mail is that it has been set to Inactive. This can happen accidentally while exploring settings. Open icloud.com in a desktop browser, go to Mail > Settings > Accounts, and check the status next to the alias under Alias Email Addresses. Setting it back to Active restores delivery within a few minutes.
If the alias is active but mail is still missing, work through these causes:
- Wrong address used by the sender. iCloud aliases always use the @icloud.com domain, even if your primary address is @me.com or @mac.com. Confirm the sender has the @icloud.com version of the alias.
- Mail filtered to another folder. A mail rule in icloud.com may be routing alias messages away from the inbox. Check Settings > Rules at icloud.com and look for any rule that moves or deletes mail matching the alias address.
- Alias not appearing in the iPhone From field. Compose a new message and tap the From line. If the alias does not appear, confirm it is Active at icloud.com. Active aliases sync to the iPhone Mail app automatically — no separate configuration is needed on the device.
- Add an Alias is greyed out. You have reached the three-alias limit. You must delete an existing alias before adding a new one. Deletion is permanent — the address cannot be recovered or recreated.
- Mail arrives but is marked as spam. This sometimes indicates the alias was recently reactivated after a period of inactivity. Check the Junk folder and mark legitimate messages as Not Junk to train the filter.
