How to Schedule an Email in Mail on iPhone (Send Later)

iPhone Mail added a Send Later option in iOS 16, and it works differently from what most people assume. You press and hold the Send button, pick a time, and Mail queues the message through Apple's servers — not on your device. That distinction answers the question every guide buries or skips: the email still goes out at the scheduled time even if your phone is switched off when that moment arrives. This guide covers the scheduling steps on iPhone and Mac, where scheduled messages live and how to change or cancel them, and what the time zone caveat actually means in practice.

The short answer#

Press and hold the blue Send button in the iPhone Mail compose window — do not tap it. A menu appears with three choices: Send Tonight (9 PM in your current time zone), Send Tomorrow Morning (8 AM), and Send Later for a custom date and time. Tap Send Later to open a date and time picker, dial in the exact moment you want the message to go, and tap Schedule. Mail moves the email out of the compose view and into a dedicated Send Later folder visible in the Mailboxes screen.

The message is held server-side through iCloud, which means your phone does not need to be on, unlocked, or connected to the internet when the scheduled time arrives. Apple's infrastructure handles the send. There is one requirement: you need an internet connection at the moment you tap Schedule, because that is when Mail hands the message to the server queue. If you try to schedule while in Airplane Mode or on a dead connection, the message stays in the compose window and the scheduling does not take effect.

The time you pick is in your device's current time zone at the moment of scheduling. If your device's clock changes after that — because you travel across time zones or adjust your Location Services settings — the scheduled send time does not automatically shift with you. A message set for 9 AM Eastern while you are in New York will transmit at 9 AM Eastern even if your phone has since moved to Tokyo time. For most senders, that is the correct behaviour; it only becomes surprising when you intended the time to follow your device's local clock rather than stay fixed.

Before you start#

Send Later requires iOS 16 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 16 or later on iPad. The feature arrived with iOS 16 in September 2022. On iOS 15 or earlier, pressing and holding the Send button does nothing — the press-and-hold menu does not exist. To check your version: open Settings, tap General, tap About, and look at the iOS Version line. If it reads 15.x or lower, updating is the only way to unlock Send Later.

The feature works with every account type supported by the built-in Mail app — Gmail via OAuth, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, IMAP, and any other provider. Scheduling is handled through iCloud's infrastructure regardless of which account the email is being sent from, so the provider does not affect whether the option appears.

Third-party email apps are unaffected by this setting. The Gmail app, the Outlook app, Spark, and similar clients each manage their own scheduling features independently. If you use multiple apps for different accounts, you need to configure send scheduling in each app separately.

How to schedule an email in iPhone Mail#

   Open Mail and compose your message

   Tap the compose button at the bottom right of the inbox (the pencil-and-paper icon). Address the email, write the subject, and finish the body before scheduling. The Send Later picker does not appear until the compose window is open.

   Press and hold the Send button

   When your message is ready, press and hold the blue Send button in the top-right corner of the compose window. Hold for roughly one second — a quick tap sends immediately, which is not what you want here. A menu slides up from the bottom of the screen.

   Choose a quick option or tap Send Later

   Send Tonight schedules the email for 9 PM in your current time zone. Send Tomorrow Morning sends at 8 AM. To pick any other time, tap Send Later to open the date and time picker.

   Set the exact date and time (if using Send Later)

   Use the scroll wheels to set the day, hour, and minute. The picker displays times in your device's current time zone — the label at the top confirms which zone it is using. Adjust to your intended delivery time.

   Tap Schedule to confirm

   Tap the Schedule button to confirm. Mail closes the compose window and moves the email into the Send Later folder. It will not appear in your Outbox or Drafts — it lives exclusively in Send Later until the scheduled time passes.

Send Later across Apple platforms#

The feature is available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with the same three options on each. The gesture is identical across platforms: press or click and hold the Send button rather than a quick tap or click. Settings do not sync between devices, and you cannot manage a message scheduled on your iPhone from a Mac's Send Later folder — the scheduled send is tied to the iCloud account, but each platform's Send Later folder shows the same queued emails because they sync through iCloud.

Where scheduled emails are stored, and how to edit or cancel one#

Scheduled emails live in the Send Later folder, which appears on the main Mailboxes screen in the Mail app. If you are inside an inbox or a folder, tap the back arrow in the top-left corner until you reach the Mailboxes screen. Send Later appears in the list alongside Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash. Each message in the folder is shown with its scheduled delivery time directly below the subject line.

To edit a scheduled email, open the Send Later folder and tap the message. It reopens in a compose window with all original fields intact — recipients, subject, body, and any attachments. Make your changes, then press and hold the Send button again and choose a new time. The original schedule is replaced entirely; there is no way to nudge a scheduled time forward by a few minutes without going through the full press-and-hold menu again.

To cancel a scheduled email, open the Send Later folder, swipe left on the message, and tap Delete. You can also open the message in compose view and tap the discard button (the trash icon). Either way, the email is removed from the queue and will not be sent. There is no way to pause or temporarily suspend a scheduled send — your only options are to let it go, reschedule it, or delete it.

What to do when iPhone Mail Send Later is not working#

If the press-and-hold menu does not appear, or tapping Schedule fails silently, the cause is almost always one of four things.

The iOS version is too old. Send Later requires iOS 16 or later. On iOS 15 or earlier, pressing and holding the Send button produces no menu — the feature simply does not exist in that release. Open Settings, General, About, and check iOS Version. If it shows 15.x, updating is the fix.

The device was offline when you tried to schedule. Send Later passes the message to Apple's servers at the moment you tap Schedule. If Mail cannot reach the internet at that instant — you are in Airplane Mode, on a connection that is dropping packets, or in a location with no signal — the scheduling does not complete. The message returns to the compose window without an error notice on some builds. Connect to a reliable network and try again.

You are composing in a third-party app. Send Later exists only in the built-in Mail app. The Gmail app, Outlook, Spark, and similar clients each handle scheduling in their own way. Apple Mail's settings and gestures have no effect on those apps. Open the app's own settings or look for a long-press on its send button to find its scheduling controls.

The time zone is set unexpectedly. This is the most common source of confusion rather than a failure. If your device is configured to update its time zone automatically based on location, and you travel after scheduling, the queued send time stays fixed to the original time zone. The message goes at the correct absolute UTC moment — but that moment may correspond to an awkward local time at your new location. To prevent this: go to Settings, General, Date and Time, and set a fixed time zone rather than automatic.
