What Happens to Your Email If You Cancel iCloud+?

If you cancel iCloud+ or let it lapse, every feature tied to the subscription stops working at the end of your billing period, not instantly. For most subscribers the impact is a storage reduction and losing Private Relay. But if you have set up a custom email domain or created Hide My Email aliases, the damage is sharper: addresses you may have shared with clients, newsletters, and colleagues stop delivering mail, and that is hard to reverse after the billing period closes.

This guide covers exactly what happens to each iCloud+ feature when you cancel, how to migrate a custom email domain before you cancel, and which parts of your iCloud account are completely unaffected. Every behaviour described here is sourced from Apple's current support documentation, as of July 2026.

The Short Answer#

When iCloud+ lapses, any custom email domain you set up through iCloud Mail stops routing mail at the end of your current billing period. You can no longer send or receive at those addresses in iCloud Mail. Any messages you received while the domain was active stay in your account. The domain itself is not deleted by Apple; it still belongs to you at your registrar. What stops is iCloud's mail servers accepting and routing mail for it.

Hide My Email addresses also stop working. The relay service that forwards mail from your random aliases to your real inbox is an iCloud+ feature. Once iCloud+ expires, those aliases go inactive and mail sent to them is returned to the sender. You do not lose the list of addresses visible in your account settings, but the forwarding stops.

Two things are not affected by cancellation: your @icloud.com address and the mail already in your iCloud mailboxes. The @icloud.com email address is part of the free iCloud tier and remains active regardless of subscription status. Your existing messages stay accessible. What you lose is the ability to route a custom domain or use Hide My Email aliases through your iCloud account.

Before You Cancel#

Cancelling without preparing first risks leaving contacts with a dead address. Run through these checks before you downgrade or cancel.

• List every iCloud+ feature you actually use. Open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, then iCloud+ Features. Note which of these are active: Custom Email Domain, Hide My Email, Private Relay, HomeKit Secure Video, and which storage tier you are on. You can only plan for what you know about.
• Identify every custom email address you use professionally. If clients, vendors, or services have your custom domain address, you need a migration plan before the address stops working. Once the subscription lapses, you cannot send from that address to notify anyone.
• Note every Hide My Email alias you want to keep routing. Find them at Settings > your name > iCloud > Hide My Email. For any service where a continuous relay matters, update your account address at that service before the billing period closes.
• Check your iCloud storage usage. If you are above the 5 GB free quota, iCloud Drive syncing and iCloud Backup will pause once the larger plan lapses. Files already stored are not immediately deleted, but no new backups or uploads will succeed until you are within the free limit.

How to Move Your Custom Domain Away from iCloud Mail#

If you want your custom domain mail to keep flowing after you leave iCloud+, you need to point it at a new mail host and update your DNS records before the subscription lapses. The migration takes roughly an hour of setup plus DNS propagation time, which is typically a few hours and occasionally up to 48.

   Set up mail hosting at a new provider

   Pick a mail host that supports custom domains. Your new host will give you a set of MX, SPF, and DKIM values to add to your domain. Create an account and note all those values before you touch any DNS records.

   Export any mail you want to keep

   Existing iCloud Mail messages stay in your account after you cancel, but it is good practice to export them first. Use the Data and Privacy portal at privacy.apple.com to request a data archive, or connect any IMAP client to both accounts and copy messages across while both connections are still active.

   Update your MX records at your registrar

   Log in to your domain registrar and replace the two iCloud MX records (mx01.mail.icloud.com and mx02.mail.icloud.com) with the MX records your new host provides. Mail will begin routing to the new host once the records propagate.

   Replace the iCloud SPF and DKIM records

   Your SPF TXT record currently names Apple's mail servers. Once you switch to a new host, mail you send through that host will fail SPF validation unless you update the record. Replace the Apple SPF include with your new host's SPF entry. Do the same for the DKIM CNAME record.

   Wait for DNS propagation

   Changes typically resolve globally within a few hours. You can monitor progress at a DNS lookup tool such as dnschecker.org. During propagation, some mail may still arrive at iCloud and some at the new host; that overlap is normal and temporary.

   Remove the domain from iCloud settings

   Once DNS is resolving to your new host, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud+ Features > Custom Email Domain, select the domain, and follow the removal steps. Messages received while the domain was active remain in your iCloud Mail account and are not deleted when you remove the domain.

   Cancel or downgrade iCloud+

   With DNS fully migrated and confirmed, cancel or downgrade in Settings > your name > Subscriptions. The subscription stops at the end of the current billing period, so you have until then to verify mail is flowing correctly through the new host.

What to Do When the Migration Does Not Go Smoothly#

Most domain migrations complete without problems, but a few issues come up reliably. Here is what to check for each one.

• Mail still arriving at iCloud hours after the DNS update: propagation is not instant. Use a DNS lookup tool to confirm your MX records are resolving to your new host globally, not just from your local network. If the old iCloud records still appear, wait and recheck every few hours.
• Outgoing mail flagged as spam after the move: your SPF record at the registrar still names Apple's mail servers. Mail sent from your new host fails SPF validation because the new host is not yet listed. Replace the Apple SPF include with the entry your new host provides; do not simply add the new entry alongside the old one.
• Cannot remove the custom domain in iCloud settings: if family members are using the same domain, Apple requires that their addresses be removed from the domain before you can remove the domain from your account. Go to iCloud+ Features > Custom Email Domain and check whether other family members appear under the domain.
• Hide My Email aliases missing from a new device after re-subscribing: aliases are stored at the account level, not the device. They reappear once iCloud+ is active again and the device finishes syncing with icloud.com, which normally takes a few minutes.
