Why ARM changes the shape of this question#

Windows on ARM devices — Surface Pro on Snapdragon, Copilot+ PCs from Lenovo, ASUS, HP, Dell and Samsung — run Windows 11 on an ARM64 CPU. Microsoft's Prism emulator lets an x64 Windows app run on that CPU by translating instructions at runtime. Most email clients on the market are x64, so most of them work — through emulation.

Emulation has a real cost. Microsoft's Windows on Arm documentation is candid that a native ARM64 build runs faster and uses less power than the same app under Prism, and users notice it on battery-critical hardware more than on plugged-in desktops. The point of a Copilot+ PC is the battery life, so an email client that eats it is the wrong shape of app on this machine.

The useful sorting question on Windows on ARM is not which app looks the most Windows-like. It is what the app is built as, and how many hours you get out of a charge with it open in the background.

How we compared them#

This is a documented capability comparison, not a benchmark. We did not run eight clients on the same Surface Pro for a month, and roundups that claim they did rarely show the receipts. Everything below is checked against each vendor's own download page and documentation as of August 2026.

Community ARM64 builds are unofficial and unsigned

Third parties (Zebra for Thunderbird, various forks) sometimes publish native ARM64 Windows builds for apps whose vendors do not. These are not signed by the vendor and receive no security updates through the vendor's channel. Weigh that against the Prism penalty before installing one for a work mailbox.

1. AI Emaily via Edge PWA — architecture-agnostic on Windows on ARM#

We build this one, so read the entry accordingly. AI Emaily connects Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com, and standard IMAP accounts into one inbox. Nothing migrates, no address changes, and replies go from the address that received the mail.

On Windows on ARM, the install path matters more than on other hardware. Two paths exist. The downloadable Windows installer — AI-Emaily-1.0.7-x64-setup.exe, 78 MB — is x64, so on ARM64 it runs under Prism with a battery penalty. The other path is a Progressive Web App installed from Edge: open aiemaily.com in the browser, install as an app, and you get a standalone window and taskbar icon that inherits the browser's native ARM64 build.

The PWA install path is what we recommend on this hardware, and it is honest to say so. The agent, the inbox, the drafting and the audit log are the same. What changes is that the app is not translated by Prism at runtime because there is no x64 binary in the way — the runtime is the ARM64 browser you already had.

The AI runs at three authority levels. Manual is an ordinary fast client. Copilot is the default: the agent triages, files and writes replies, and nothing reaches a recipient until you approve it. Autopilot is gated per rule, with an undo window and an audit log recording every action and why it ran.

Pick it if you want the AI to run the inbox and want to avoid the Prism penalty without waiting for a vendor to ship an ARM64 build.

2. New Outlook for Windows — the native ARM64 dimension we concede#

New Outlook is the default Windows 11 mail client and it is part of Microsoft's native ARM64 rollout for Microsoft 365 apps on Copilot+ PCs. That is the dimension we concede outright on this page.

New Outlook for Windows ships a genuine native ARM64 binary from Microsoft's own toolchain — our downloadable Windows installer does not. If you want a native desktop app on Windows on ARM without emulation and without going through the browser, new Outlook is the option that ships one, and eating that fact is what makes the rest of this page worth reading.

It connects Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud and other IMAP or POP accounts. Exchange on-premises is not supported here. Copilot in Outlook adds Summary, Draft with Copilot and Coaching, all inside a message you have open, and all behind the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on licence on top of an eligible subscription.

The trade-off against a browser-installed AI-native client is not architecture — it is what the AI does. Copilot helps inside the one message you have open. It does not work the inbox in the background, and there is no autonomy mode with an audit log.

3. Classic Outlook (Microsoft 365) — native ARM64 with the full desktop surface#

The Microsoft 365 apps for ARM64 include the classic Outlook Win32 client. On a Copilot+ PC this is the option to reach for when your work depends on COM add-ins, VBA macros or a local PST archive — those things still run in classic Outlook and do not run in new Outlook, whichever CPU you are on.

Copilot works here too through the same add-on licence, at the same assist ceiling — Summarize above a thread, Draft and Coaching inside a message.

The catch is the shape of the app itself. Classic Outlook is the deepest, heaviest client on this list. Microsoft supports it through perpetual and subscription licensing until at least 2029, so it is not being switched off this year, but the direction of travel is new Outlook and delegation is already split — mail-folder delegate permissions still have to be assigned from classic.

4. Gmail or Outlook on the web via Edge — no installed app at all#

The most conservative option on a Windows on ARM laptop is not to install a mail app at all. Open aiemaily.com, mail.google.com or outlook.live.com in ARM64 Edge and install the page as a PWA. Standalone window, taskbar icon, notifications, no Prism translation.

Vendor-native AI is available in both — Gemini in Gmail behind Google One AI Premium or a Workspace add-on, Copilot in Outlook.com behind Microsoft 365 Copilot. Both stay inside the one message you have open, in the same way as the desktop Outlook clients.

The limits are the ones any web-only inbox has. Offline mail is thin — Gmail Offline works for a limited window, Outlook on the web is close to online-only. And you get one account per PWA window unless the provider supports multi-account chrome inside it. If offline archive matters more than architecture, this is the wrong entry.

5. eM Client — a full desktop suite under Prism emulation#

eM Client is the long-running Windows desktop suite: mail, calendar, contacts, tasks and chat in one window, across Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Exchange, and IMAP. It kept a full offline mailbox long before that became fashionable and picked up Postbox refugees after Postbox development ended in December 2024.

The AI is drafting and rewriting inside the compose window — Reply with AI, summarise, rephrase, expand — with eM Client naming ChatGPT as the provider and supplying the access.

On Windows on ARM, eM Client runs as an x64 app through Prism. The vendor has not published an ARM64 Windows build and user requests for one sit in the eM Client forum unanswered as of August 2026. If you want a full desktop suite and can accept the emulation penalty on battery, this is the option. If battery is why you bought a Copilot+ PC in the first place, it is the wrong shape.

6. Mailbird — unified inbox first, no ARM64 build#

Mailbird launched in 2013 as a Windows-only client and added macOS in October 2024. The pitch is a unified inbox across unlimited accounts — Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, IMAP — with a sidebar that keeps Slack, WhatsApp, Google Calendar, Todoist and Dropbox one click away.

The AI is a writing assistant built on a ChatGPT integration — draft a reply, rewrite what you already wrote, get through a backlog faster. Recent releases have gone after the fundamentals instead: advanced search, a contacts manager, tracker blocking in the privacy hub.

The Windows installer is x64. On ARM64 hardware it runs under Prism. Mailbird has not published an ARM64 build or a public commitment to one. Choose it on Copilot+ hardware only if the sidebar of integrations matters more than the battery hit.

7. Thunderbird — no official ARM64 build, and what to do about it#

Thunderbird is the only client here you can run with no vendor relationship at all. It connects Gmail, Outlook, IMAP and POP, keeps a complete local mail store, and gives you filters, folders and a search index that all work with the network off.

There is no official Windows ARM64 build from Mozilla as of August 2026. The idea has been open on Mozilla Connect for two years and Firefox ships a native ARM64 Windows build, but Thunderbird does not. The Mozilla installer is x64, so on ARM it runs through Prism.

There are two escape hatches. Zebra publishes unofficial ARM64 Windows builds of Thunderbird straight from the release branch — these are not signed by Mozilla and get no updates through Mozilla's channel. Betterbird, the maintained Thunderbird fork, has a Windows ARM64 build request open and documents an aarch64 build environment. Weigh those against the Prism penalty for a work mailbox.

The Windows 11 Mail and Calendar app was retired

If you inherited a Copilot+ PC still pointing at the old Windows Mail app, note that Microsoft retired it on 31 December 2024 and users are now moved to new Outlook. That is not a real option on Windows on ARM in 2026 and it is not in the table above for that reason.

8. Spark Desktop — Electron under Prism#

Spark from Readdle is the shared-inbox option in this list. A smart inbox separates people from newsletters and notifications, and the AI assistant drafts, rephrases and summarises. Underneath, two colleagues can comment privately on a thread, share a draft and hand a conversation over without buying a helpdesk.

Readdle put Spark Desktop on Electron so Windows and Mac could ship together, and has written about that trade-off on its own blog. The Windows build is x64, so on Windows on ARM it runs under Prism.

The specific weakness on Copilot+ hardware is not Spark's AI, which is competent for what it claims. It is the shape of an Electron x64 app on an ARM battery. If you were already going to choose Spark, install it as a PWA from Edge where possible; the desktop app is the entry with the largest gap between what the hardware can do and what the installer asks of it.

How to choose for your situation#

Most of the decision on Windows on ARM is one fork: do you need a downloadable installed app, or can you install a PWA from the browser? Answer that and the list shrinks to two or three.
