What the shape of the table shows#

Two things stand out once you read the columns instead of the rows. First, provider-native snooze dominates whenever it exists — Gmail's, Microsoft's, and every client that leans on them all behave the same way on the one dimension that matters most, which is reply mid-snooze. That is the wake-me-if-this-becomes-urgent shape, and it is quietly the correct default for most people.

Second, the follow-up chase column is nearly empty. Snooze is close to a solved commodity across serious clients; the second half of the workflow — noticing when a snoozed thread returned with no reply and doing something about it — is where the category is still open, and it is the reason we built the agent layer on top of an otherwise conventional provider-native snooze.

How to test the snooze-and-follow-up combination

Snooze a thread you sent yesterday, then leave the agent's follow-up check on. When the snooze returns with no reply in the thread, you get a suggested draft ready to send instead of a blank cold thread reappearing at the top of the inbox.

2. Gmail (web app and mobile apps) — the free default that most clients inherit#

Gmail's own snooze is one click on desktop, one long-press on mobile, and it comes with any Gmail or Google Workspace account at no extra cost. Presets (Later today, Tomorrow, This weekend, Next week, Someday) or a custom date and time; the thread leaves the inbox and reappears at the chosen time in the Snoozed system label.

Reply behaviour is the useful default: if the other party replies before the return time, Gmail unsnoozes immediately and the thread reappears at the top of the inbox. Because snooze is a Gmail-side label rather than a client-side timer, every Gmail client you install — Gmail on iOS and Android, the Gmail web app, and third-party clients that use the Gmail API — sees the same snoozed state at the same time. That is real cross-device consistency, not a promise the client has to keep in sync itself.

The limits are on the outer edges. There is no recurring snooze, no conditional snooze, and no follow-up prompt when the thread returns cold. It also does not exist on non-Gmail accounts you might have added to Gmail via POP or IMAP. For most people this is the correct pick because it lives inside the app they already have and does not add a subscription.

3. New Outlook and Outlook on the web — Microsoft's client-side answer#

Microsoft's snooze lives in the New Outlook for Windows and Mac and in Outlook on the web at outlook.office.com. It is available on Microsoft 365 work, school and personal accounts through those two surfaces. State of the feature as of 2026: it is not in Classic Outlook on Windows and Microsoft has said publicly it will not be added there. Classic Outlook support ends in October 2027, so this is the migration path Microsoft is nudging users toward.

The behaviour matches Gmail's shape. A reply on a snoozed thread returns it to the inbox before the scheduled time, and snooze state syncs through Microsoft Graph so New Outlook, Outlook on the web and Outlook mobile all agree on what is asleep. There are no recurring or conditional options, and no prompt when a snoozed thread comes back with nothing on it.

If your organisation still runs Classic Outlook on Windows and cannot move, native Outlook snooze is simply not available to you — you need either an add-in, an email-based reminder tool, or a third-party client that adds snooze on top of Microsoft's mail store. Verify current availability on Microsoft's help pages before you plan a rollout around it.

4. Shortwave — AI-native Gmail client, snooze via archive#

Shortwave is a Gmail-only client built by ex-Google engineers and it is one of the strongest AI-native contenders in the category, particularly on Gmail semantic search. Its snooze looks and feels the same as Gmail's from the reader's side, but it is implemented differently under the hood: Shortwave uses Gmail's archive rather than Gmail's native snooze label, and reads its own metadata to know when to bring a thread back.

The practical effect for the reader is that reply behaviour still lines up with what you would expect — an incoming reply on a snoozed thread returns it, because a new message on an archived thread pulls it back into the inbox anyway. The consequence for cross-client consistency is more subtle: because Shortwave's snooze is not Gmail's snooze label, the state can briefly disagree with Gmail's own view during sync, and threads snoozed in Shortwave will not appear in Gmail's Snoozed label the way natively snoozed threads do.

Shortwave supports recurring snooze, which Gmail does not. There is no built-in drafted follow-up when a thread returns cold. Packaging shape is a mix of free tier and paid plans on the last check, but the pricing page had moved recently — verify on shortwave.com before assuming.

5. Superhuman Mail — the keyboard-driven snooze workflow#

Since Grammarly's acquisition in July 2025 and the parent company rename in October of that year, the product this section discusses is Superhuman Mail — the email client — as distinct from the wider Superhuman Suite bundle. It runs on Gmail and Microsoft 365 mailboxes and it is priced per user, not free tier; check the vendor page for the current per-seat number.

Snooze here uses each provider's server-side implementation, so reply mid-snooze unsnoozes on both Gmail and Microsoft accounts and the state agrees across every client on the same mailbox. What is distinctive is the pairing with the remind-me flow: on the same keyboard gesture path, a user can ask to be reminded of a thread if the recipient has not replied by a given time, which is the closest thing to a client-side follow-up chase in this list without adding an add-in.

The reason to prefer Superhuman Mail specifically for snooze is the muscle memory. Years of iteration on the keyboard command palette mean the snooze and remind-me gestures are as low-effort as they get, and if you shop for that speed over the other five dimensions this is the honest pick. There is no drafted follow-up, no recurring snooze, and no cross-provider unified inbox in the way AI Emaily or Spark deliver.

6. Spark — the multi-provider unified snooze#

Spark from Readdle is the multi-provider client on this list. It connects Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo and IMAP, and its snooze works as a single mechanism across all of them, syncing state through Spark's own service so that a snooze set on iOS shows on macOS moments later. That is the cleanest cross-provider snooze in this list and it is why Spark ends up on shortlists for people who genuinely live in more than one mailbox at once.

Behaviour on reply is close to provider-native — a new reply on a snoozed thread returns it — with the added shape that Spark also nudges if no reply arrives by the return time, which is the closest built-in analogue to a follow-up reminder outside of AI Emaily. Recurring snooze is available; conditional "only if no reply" is not modelled as an explicit option the way Boomerang does it.

Packaging shape is freemium — free personal plan, paid team plan; verify on the vendor page. The other consideration Spark asks of you is the metadata trade-off: because snooze state and cross-device sync run through Readdle's own service, some message metadata sits on their servers rather than only on the provider's. That is a documented trade-off, not a hidden one, but it is a decision worth making deliberately if you are privacy-sensitive.

7. Mimestream — native Mac Gmail client that inherits Gmail snooze#

Mimestream is a native macOS Gmail client — Swift and AppKit, not an Electron shell — built specifically for Gmail via the Gmail API. Its snooze is therefore Gmail's snooze: threads snoozed in Mimestream carry Gmail's own Snoozed label, appear in the Gmail web app and mobile app snoozed view at the same time, and unsnooze on reply the same way as Gmail's own client.

The reason to pick Mimestream for this job is the same as the reason to pick it in general: if you want a native-toolkit Mac binary that feels like an Apple app and lives on a Gmail account, Mimestream is the specialist and its snooze inherits Gmail's guarantees for free. Cross-client consistency is perfect because there is no Mimestream-side state to disagree with anything.

The limits are the ones that follow from being a specialist. Gmail-only — no Microsoft 365, no iCloud, no IMAP. macOS-only — no Windows, no Linux, and the iOS story is Gmail's own mobile app rather than a Mimestream mobile app. And no follow-up chase when the snooze returns cold; that is out of scope for the client. 8. Thunderbird — open source, no native snooze#

Thunderbird is the open-source cross-platform client from MZLA. It reads any IMAP account — Gmail, Microsoft 365, iCloud, Fastmail, generic IMAP — and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The relevant fact for this list: the base Thunderbird client does not ship a snooze feature. The closest option is an add-on that adds a client-side snooze timer to the local profile, which is a genuinely different shape from provider-native snooze.

Because the add-on runs a client-side timer against the local profile, reply mid-snooze does not cancel the timer, and the snooze does not survive when you open the same account in a different client or on a phone. That is not a Thunderbird criticism so much as an honest description: it is a local mail client, and any snooze layered on top of it inherits local-mail-client semantics.

The reason to pick Thunderbird is the same as it has been for twenty years: you want an open-source, cross-platform mail client that runs on Linux, and you are willing to trade AI features and modern conveniences for that. If snooze is a hard requirement, this is not the row of the table to pick. Everything about the client is free.

How to choose for your situation#

The right pick depends less on who scores highest across all six dimensions and more on which one you refuse to compromise on.
