Mimestream is a native macOS client built on the Gmail API. Shortwave is an AI-first Gmail client with apps on several platforms.
Most comparisons score these two on interface polish. That misses the axis that decides it for someone who lives in labels, filters and search operators. The verdict up front#
For a Gmail power user on a Mac whose muscle memory is from:, has:attachment, older_than:, nested labels and server-side filters, Mimestream is the better client. It states plainly that it supports all of Gmail's search operators, it manages Gmail's server-side filters rather than its own rules layer, and it is a real native macOS app rather than a web view in a window.
For someone whose real problem is that they cannot remember where the answer is, Shortwave is the better client. Its search is built to answer a question across the mailbox instead of returning a list you still have to read. It also runs on Windows, iPhone and Android, which Mimestream does not.
Let us concede the harder half of that outright: if the job is Gmail fidelity on a Mac, Shortwave does not beat Mimestream, and neither do we. A client that mirrors Gmail's own semantics exactly is a narrow, well-executed thing, and Mimestream is the one doing it.

Where Mimestream wins: Gmail semantics, exactly#
Gmail power users usually end up unhappy with third-party clients because the client re-implements Gmail's concepts approximately. Labels become folders. Filters become the app's own rules. Categories disappear. Search works, but not with the syntax you already know.
Mimestream's design premise is not doing that. It is built on the Gmail API and presents Gmail's own objects: labels with Gmail's colour-coding and visibility settings, Gmail's categories, Gmail's threading, and Gmail's server-side filters edited from the client.
- Search operators — Mimestream's documentation states it fully supports all of Gmail's search operators: from:, to:, subject:, after:, before:, older_than:, newer_than:, has:attachment, category:, size comparisons and the rest.
- A token bar on top of that — as you type, a suggestion menu turns terms into tokens, so you can build a complex query without remembering every operator name.
- Server-side filters — filters you create in Mimestream are Gmail filters. They run on Google's servers, so they apply to mail arriving on your phone, on gmail.com, and in any other client.
- Labels as labels — multiple labels per thread, nested labels, and Gmail's show/hide behaviour, rather than a folder metaphor bolted on.
The one search limitation to know about#
Mimestream's search inherits Gmail's indexing rules, including one that surprises people migrating from a local-index client such as Apple Mail or a desktop IMAP client. Gmail's search index matches whole words. Typing part of a word does not reliably match the full word containing it.
This is a Gmail API constraint, not something Mimestream invented, and its own help documentation says so. It is the most common reason a power user concludes a Gmail-API client is "worse at search" when it is being exactly as good as Gmail is.

Where Shortwave wins: search that answers instead of listing#
Shortwave's pitch is that you should be able to ask your mailbox a question and get an answer, rather than write a query and get a list. Its own site describes AI-powered search used to find mail fast or to analyse an entire team's emails and attachments for the answer you need.
That is a different job from operator search, and it is the one most comparison pages fail to separate. Operator search is precise retrieval: you know what you want and can describe it structurally. AI search is recall: you know roughly what happened and not where it lives. These are complements, not competitors — the question is which one your week is actually made of.

The ceiling on AI search nobody mentions#
One detail matters a great deal to power users with large mailboxes and rarely appears in comparison content: AI search is metered, and it has a reach limit. Shortwave's pricing page describes a daily allowance of AI requests, different intelligence levels per tier, a cap on how many threads a single search can consider, and a context limit that varies by tier.
That is not a criticism — running a model over a mailbox costs real money, and publishing the limits is more honest than hiding them. But it changes the comparison. Operator search has no per-day budget and no ceiling on how many threads it can match. AI search is the better tool for the question you cannot phrase, inside a quota.

AI search means mailbox content reaches a model
Which Gmail client is fastest on Mac?#
"Fastest" hides two different questions, and the two products win one each.
On raw interface responsiveness on macOS — window opening, scrolling a long thread list, keyboard navigation, memory footprint — a native client built against Apple's own toolkit has a structural advantage over a cross-platform app shell. Mimestream is a native macOS client requiring macOS 12 or newer and optimised for Apple Silicon. Shortwave ships Mac and Windows desktop apps from a shared codebase.
On time-to-answer, the ranking can flip. If finding a fact takes you four refined operator queries and two attachment opens in Mimestream, and one question in Shortwave, Shortwave was faster at the task even if every individual frame was slower.
We have not benchmarked either app, and you should distrust any page quoting a millisecond figure without a published method. Both offer a trial: install them and time your own three most common retrieval tasks.
Mimestream vs Shortwave offline support#
Neither vendor leads with a full offline-archive claim, and this is the dimension where a power user coming from a classic desktop client is most likely to be disappointed by both.
Mimestream's documentation describes the Gmail-backed model plainly: your mail stays on Gmail's servers, and changes you make in Mimestream sync back as soon as a connection is available. That gives you queued actions rather than a complete local mailbox you can search on a plane.
Shortwave's mailbox and its AI features are similarly server-dependent — AI search in particular cannot run without a network, because the model is not on your laptop.
The practical rule: if you need a genuine full local archive with offline search across years of mail, neither category fits — look at a traditional cached IMAP client. If you need to read and draft on a flight and have it send on landing, both are fine. Confirm the current behaviour on each vendor's help pages, since this detail changes between releases.
Platform coverage and the second-device problem#
This is Shortwave's cleanest win and it is not close. Shortwave lists Mac and Windows desktop apps, iOS and Android apps, and browser access. Mimestream is macOS only; its FAQ says an iOS version does not exist yet but is actively being worked on, with a TestFlight beta planned before public release.
For a Gmail power user, the practical consequence is that Mimestream is a Mac-desktop experience with the Gmail mobile app as your phone client. That is not necessarily bad — Gmail's own mobile apps are good, and because Mimestream uses Gmail's real labels and server-side filters, your organisation carries over perfectly to them.
The mismatch is felt more with Shortwave's own layers. Its bundling and AI filters are Shortwave concepts: they travel across Shortwave's apps and do not exist when you open gmail.com. Mimestream's organisation travels everywhere Gmail does, including places Mimestream has never been installed. That portability is invisible until you switch clients and find out how much of your setup was borrowed.

Mimestream is packaged as a straightforward client subscription: a free trial, then a paid plan, with an individual tier and a group tier, billed monthly or annually. There is no permanent free tier. You are paying for a client.
Shortwave is packaged as a per-seat SaaS product with several named tiers, a time-limited trial, and — importantly — usage metering on the AI features. Higher tiers buy stronger models, more daily AI requests, more AI filters, and a larger search reach. You are paying for a client plus an AI budget.
That difference matters more than the headline figures. A client subscription is predictable; a usage-metered AI product has a tier you can outgrow. Check both vendors' pricing pages when you decide, and read Shortwave's usage table, not just the plan names.

Both are Gmail-only today: Mimestream lists Outlook, IMAP and JMAP as planned, and Shortwave's docs say Microsoft 365 and Exchange are not supported.
