Where each one wins and where it doesn't#
A comparison table can only summarise. The real trade-off is what happens the first time threading misbehaves — a merged thread you have to split, a Gmail label that shows five copies of one message, a subject rewrite that fractures a two-week exchange. Below is what each client actually does when that happens.

2. Thunderbird — the standards-strict header chain#
Thunderbird threads by the References and In-Reply-To headers as specified in the IMAP threading algorithm (RFC 5256), and it does so more literally than any other client on this list. That is the reason to pick it: a Thunderbird thread survives subject rewrites, prefix inconsistencies ("AW:", "SV:", "Fwd:") and reordering, because none of those affect the header chain. On a mailing list or a long project thread where the subject drifts, Thunderbird holds the conversation together where a subject-matching client would split it.
Where it doesn't win: cross-folder dedup on Gmail-style label systems is not Thunderbird's strength — the same message in Inbox and All Mail can appear twice in the same view unless you scope carefully. The UI is what a decade of open-source iteration produces, which for many users is a feature and for others is a reason to keep looking. 3. Apple Mail — header-first, per-mailbox, at rest on macOS and iOS#
Apple Mail threads by the header chain by default and offers an option to also thread by subject when the chain is missing, giving you the RFC-standards behaviour with a controllable fallback. "Organize by Conversation" is a per-mailbox toggle in the View menu on macOS, and "Organize by Thread" in Settings → Mail on iOS. It handles your own sent messages cleanly and highlights related messages inside a thread. If you already live in the Apple ecosystem and want a native client with rigorous threading, this is the shortest path to it.
The limits are the limits of a client tied to a platform. Apple Mail is Apple platforms only, its automation surface is thinner than Outlook's, and threading is scoped to the mailbox you are viewing rather than doing aggressive cross-folder dedup on providers like Gmail. 4. Gmail — headers plus a matching subject required#
Gmail's Conversation view is the historical reference implementation of consumer email threading, and its rule is simple to describe: messages are grouped when both the header chain says they belong together and the subject matches after normalisation. If someone edits the subject mid-thread, Gmail starts a new conversation even though In-Reply-To and References still link the messages. Gmail also caps a single conversation near 100 messages before splitting. Because Gmail's label model stores one underlying message under multiple labels, its own client shows the message once across labels — the dedup you'd want on Gmail-style mail is built in.

5. Outlook (new and classic) — subject-leaning, with a cross-folder switch#
Outlook groups messages into Conversations using both the header chain and subject matching, and it leans harder on subject than Gmail does. In practice that means Outlook will merge same-subject exchanges more aggressively — occasionally including unrelated ones — and will hold a conversation together across a subject rewrite where Gmail would split it. The distinctive Outlook feature is "Show Messages from Other Folders," which lets a conversation gather replies you (or a rule) filed into different folders, so the whole exchange appears in one place even though the messages are physically stored apart.
New Outlook and classic Outlook have different defaults and menus. In new Outlook and Outlook on the web, the toggle lives at Settings → Mail → Layout → Message organization. 6. Shortwave — Gmail's rules with an AI layer on top#
Shortwave is an AI-native client built for Gmail and only Gmail. Its conversation view inherits Gmail's threading rules essentially unchanged — because the mail lives on Google's servers and Shortwave reads it through Google's API — so a message that Gmail groups gets grouped in Shortwave, and a subject rewrite that splits a thread in Gmail splits it in Shortwave too. If you live entirely in Gmail and want an AI-native reading experience built on Gmail's native threading, Shortwave has built harder on Gmail-shaped features than a cross-provider client can.

7. Superhuman Mail — Grammarly's client, threading inherited from Gmail or Outlook#
Two disambiguations first. In July 2025 Grammarly acquired Superhuman the client, and in October 2025 Grammarly renamed its parent company to Superhuman. Two distinct things now share the name: Superhuman Mail (the client) and the Superhuman Suite (the bundle). This section is about Superhuman Mail. It's a keyboard-driven client for Gmail and Outlook, and its conversation view is essentially the underlying provider's — Gmail's rules on a Gmail account, Outlook's on an Outlook account. Superhuman Mail's contribution is the reading UI, not a different threading algorithm.
That is worth knowing because it caps what you can expect from Superhuman Mail on threading specifically: if Gmail merges two unrelated exchanges with a shared "Hello" subject, so does Superhuman Mail on that mailbox. The trade-off is that Spark's account model runs through its own servers, which is a legitimate consideration on the privacy dimension — you are trusting an intermediary in a way you are not with Apple Mail or Thunderbird. How to turn conversation view off, per client#
Threading is a preference, not a permanent setting. If a flat message list works better for you — a common preference for high-volume triage — every major client has an off switch. None of these are destructive: the underlying messages are untouched, only the display changes.
