These are documented capability comparisons, not a lab test. We did not run seven clients side by side for a month, and roundups claiming they did rarely show receipts. Everything below is checked against each vendor's own documentation as of July 2026.

1. AI Emaily — the best AI email client for Mac overall#

We build this one, so read the entry accordingly; everything in it is checkable on our own download page. AI Emaily connects Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Outlook, and standard IMAP accounts, into a single inbox. Nothing migrates and no address changes.

That matters on a Mac, because the strongest Mac AI clients are Gmail-only and most professionals have a second account elsewhere.

The AI runs at three authority levels. Manual is an ordinary fast client. Copilot is the default: the agent triages, files and writes replies, and nothing reaches a recipient until you approve it. Autopilot is gated per rule, with an undo window and an audit log recording every action and its reason.

Drafting voice comes from a Personal Context brain and per-client profiles you write and edit yourself. We do not mine your archive to imitate you, and we do not train models on your mail.

On macOS there is a real app to download: AI-Emaily-1.0.7-arm64.dmg, 93 MB, released July 2026 — its own window, a Dock icon, Command-Tab, system notifications, and features that reach the desktop the day they reach the web.

The other half is equally true. It is an Electron shell around our web interface, not a Swift or AppKit binary; the build is Apple Silicon only; and it is not in the Mac App Store. Against Mimestream or Apple Mail, expect more memory, no Spotlight search inside your mail, and partial offline rather than a full local archive.

Pick it if what the agent does matters more than what the window is made of.

2. Superhuman Mail — AI at keyboard speed#

Names first. Grammarly acquired Superhuman, the email client, in July 2025, then renamed the parent company Superhuman in October 2025. Superhuman Mail is the client; Superhuman Suite is the bundle. Reviews describing an independent startup predate all of that.

The client is still the fastest keyboard workflow in this category, and its AI is built into that speed rather than bolted beside it: writing with AI inside a draft, automatic drafts and labels, and an ask-AI panel on the desktop app. If you clear a large volume by hand, this is the strongest alternative to our pick.

Two caveats. AI capability moved into higher tiers after the acquisition, so compare the tier you would actually buy rather than the homepage feature list. And it covers Gmail and Outlook only, which rules it out if one of your accounts sits on a host of its own.

3. Spark — AI drafting inside an inbox two people share#

Spark from Readdle pairs a smart inbox that separates people from newsletters and notifications with an AI assistant that drafts, rephrases and summarises. It connects Gmail, Outlook and IMAP, and it has the strongest shared-inbox story here: private comments on a thread, shared drafts and delegation, without buying a helpdesk.

It is also the clearest example of the trade-off this page is about. Readdle explained the move plainly on its own blog: the all-new Spark Desktop is built on Electron so Mac and Windows ship together, replacing the older native Spark 2 for Mac. The iPhone and iPad apps remain native.

So Spark is not the Mac-native pick that older reviews still call it, and its AI is metered and spread across subscription tiers. Choose it when two people answer one address and want drafting help inside that workflow.

4. Canary Mail — AI drafting plus encryption, four providers#

Canary Mail is the multi-provider option with the strongest privacy feature set: Gmail, Outlook, iCloud and IMAP in one client, with end-to-end encryption, SecureSend for password-protected expiring messages, and pixel and tracker blocking.

Its AI sits in the middle of the ladder. AI Copilot writes draft replies and rewrites tone, AI Summary condenses long threads, and Smart Search takes plain-language questions across accounts and attachments. That is drafting and search, not an agent working a queue.

Canary reached the Mac and iPhone before Windows and Android and it feels like it, but the vendor does not publish what the Mac build is made of, so we will not claim native on its behalf. Encryption deserves one line of realism too: PGP only protects a thread when the other side takes part, which in most business mail they will not.

5. Apple Mail — free, native, and the AI is assistance#

Apple Mail is already on your Mac, costs nothing, and connects to Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange and any IMAP server. On integration nothing else is close: Spotlight indexes your messages, Handoff moves a draft to your iPhone mid-sentence, and Mail Privacy Protection blocks tracking pixels.

Its AI is Apple Intelligence, and it is real: summaries under unread messages, thread summaries on demand, Smart Reply that spots questions you have not answered, Priority Messages, and inbox categories. What you get depends on the Mac, the region and the language, so check Apple's own support page rather than any comparison table, this one included.

The ceiling is the point. Apple Intelligence assists you inside a message; it does not work the inbox against a brief you wrote, and Mail rules run on your Mac only while Mail is open. Pick it if your real complaint is that email needs less software, not more.

6. Mimestream — the least AI, the best-built app here#

Mimestream is the best-made application on this page and it has the least AI, which is exactly why it belongs on it. It is a Gmail client written in Swift against Apple's own frameworks, founded by a former Apple Mail engineer, and it behaves like software that belongs to macOS: instant launch, low memory on Apple Silicon, real menus, native notifications, Focus filters.

It also respects Gmail's model instead of approximating it. Labels are labels, filters are server-side Gmail filters, and aliases, categories and multiple accounts work the way Google intends rather than the way an IMAP layer guesses.

This is the dimension we concede outright. If you want a native-toolkit Mac email client, Mimestream is better built than the AI Emaily Mac app and we will not pretend otherwise. The trade is that it ships no built-in AI drafting or triage as of July 2026, and it is Gmail and Google Workspace only, macOS only. Want both? 7. Thunderbird — free, open source, bring your own AI#

Thunderbird is the only client here you can run without a vendor relationship at all. It connects to Gmail, Outlook, IMAP and POP, keeps a full local mail store, and gives you filters, folders and a search index that all work on a plane.

Its AI is bring-your-own. As of July 2026 nothing ships in the core app: the project's own Thunderbird Assist experiment was an opt-in add-on whose private alpha has ended, and the working position is that smart features live in add-ons rather than the core. Community add-ons such as ThunderAI wire the message you are reading to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or a local Ollama model.

That is real control and real work. You pick the model, accept the add-on's data path, and keep it running. Note also that Thunderbird is a native binary on Mozilla's own toolkit rather than AppKit, so it is neither Electron nor Mac-native in the way Mimestream is.

How to choose for your situation#

Most of this decision is one fork: do you want the AI to help you write, or to work the inbox? Answer that and the list shrinks to two.
