AI Emaily is the best AI email client for Mac if you want the AI to work the whole inbox across several accounts, with your approval before anything is sent. Mimestream is the best-built native app if you only use Gmail. Superhuman Mail is the fastest by keyboard. And Apple Mail already has Apple Intelligence: summaries, Smart Reply and Priority Messages on supported Macs.

So the real question is not whether a Mac mail app has AI, but how much you want it to do. If you only read this:

An AI mail client can mean four very different levels of involvement, and choosing the wrong level is the usual reason people quit one of these apps in week three. Decide which row you want before comparing feature lists.

These are documented capability comparisons from each vendor's own pages, checked in October 2026, not a lab test. Three things decide the ranking:

• AI ceiling: does it assist, draft, triage or act?
• Guardrails: approval before send, undo, and a record of what the AI did.
• How it is built on macOS: native, Electron, or not published, stated for every entry including ours.

1. AI Emaily — the best AI email client for Mac overall#

We build this one, so read the entry accordingly. AI Emaily puts Gmail (through the Gmail API), Outlook and Microsoft 365 (through Microsoft Graph), and iCloud, Fastmail, Yahoo and other providers (over IMAP) into one inbox. Nothing migrates and no address changes, which matters on a Mac because the strongest native clients are Gmail-only.

The AI runs at three levels. Manual is a fast client with AI on demand. Copilot triages and drafts replies, and nothing reaches a recipient until you approve it. Autopilot, on the Autopilot and Team plans, handles routine mail within the rules you set, with an undo window and an audit log of every action and its reason.

Drafts use the voice you set in your Personal Context, plus per-client profiles you write and edit yourself. We do not mine your archive to imitate you, and we do not train models on your mail.

The Mac app is a signed, notarized download for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later; get the current build from the download page. It has its own window, Dock icon, Command-Tab and system notifications. It is also an Electron app that loads our web interface, it is not in the Mac App Store, and next to Mimestream or Apple Mail it uses more memory, has no Spotlight search inside your mail, and needs a connection for mail and AI.

• Pick it if what the agent does across all your accounts matters more than what the window is made of.
• Skip it if you need a native-toolkit app or a full offline archive.

2. Superhuman Mail — AI at keyboard speed#

Names first. Grammarly acquired Superhuman, the email client, in July 2025, then renamed the parent company Superhuman in October 2025. Superhuman Mail is the client; Superhuman Suite is the bundle that also includes Grammarly and Coda.

It is still the fastest keyboard workflow in this category. Its site describes Superhuman AI as an inbox assistant that organises mail, drafts replies and can send them for you, plus Split Inbox sorting and AI workflows. If you clear a large volume by hand, this is the strongest alternative to our pick.

Two caveats. It is built for Gmail or Outlook only, so a mailbox on another host is out. And its main page does not say which plans include which AI features, so compare the tier you would actually buy.

• Pick it if you live in Gmail or Outlook and speed is the whole point.
• Skip it if you have an iCloud or IMAP account, or want an approval step you can see on every send.

3. Spark — AI drafting inside an inbox two people share#

Spark from Readdle pairs a smart inbox that separates people from newsletters and notifications with an AI assistant that drafts, rephrases and summarises. It connects Gmail, Outlook and IMAP, and its shared-inbox features, such as private comments on a thread and shared drafts, are the strongest here.

It is also the clearest example of the trade-off this page is about. Readdle says the all-new Spark Desktop is built on Electron because it was the only way to ship Mac and Windows together. The older Spark 2 for Mac stays available and supported on the Mac App Store, so check which one you are installing.

• Pick it if two people answer one address and want drafting help inside that workflow.
• Skip it if you chose Spark for being Mac-native; the new desktop app is not.

4. Canary Mail — AI drafting plus encryption#

Canary Mail is the multi-provider option with the strongest privacy feature set: Gmail, Outlook, iCloud and IMAP in one client, with end-to-end encryption, SecureSend for password-protected expiring messages, and automatic pixel and tracker blocking. PGP sits on a higher plan.

Its AI sits in the middle of the ladder. AI Copilot writes replies and rewrites tone, AI Summary condenses long threads, and Smart Search takes plain-language questions across accounts. That is drafting and search, not an agent working through your mail. Canary does not publish what its Mac build is made of, so we will not call it native on its behalf.

• Pick it if encryption and tracker blocking come first and drafting help is enough.
• Skip it if you want the AI to triage and act, not just write.

5. Apple Mail — free, native, and the AI is assistance#

Apple Mail is already on your Mac, costs nothing, and connects to Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange and any IMAP server. On integration nothing else is close: Spotlight indexes your messages, Handoff moves a draft to your iPhone, and Mail Privacy Protection hides your activity from tracking pixels.

Its AI is Apple Intelligence, and it is real. Apple's guide lists summaries under unread messages, a Summarize button for a whole thread, Smart Reply suggestions that draft a reply for you, and Priority Messages for time-sensitive mail, alongside Mail categories (Primary, Transactions, Updates, Promotions). Apple Intelligence is not available on every Mac model, language or region, so check Apple's support page.

6. Mimestream — the least AI, the best-built app here#

Mimestream is the best-made application on this page and it has the least AI, which is why it belongs here. It is a native macOS Gmail client built on the Gmail API by Neil Jhaveri, who previously worked on Apple's Mail app, and it behaves like software that belongs to macOS: fast launch, real menus, native notifications.

It also respects Gmail's model. Labels are labels, filters are Gmail's server-side filters, and categories and multiple Google accounts work the way Google intends.

This is the dimension we concede outright: Mimestream is better built than the AI Emaily Mac app, and we will not pretend otherwise. The trade is that its site lists no AI drafting or triage as of October 2026, and it is Google accounts only, macOS only.

• Pick it if you only use Gmail and a native app is non-negotiable.
• Skip it if you have a non-Google account or want AI drafting built in.

7. Thunderbird — free, open source, bring your own AI#

Thunderbird is the only client here you can run without a vendor relationship at all. It connects to Gmail, Outlook, IMAP and POP, keeps a full local mail store, and its filters, folders and search all work on a plane.

Its AI is bring-your-own. As of October 2026 nothing AI ships in the free desktop app. Mozilla has talked about an optional assistant, Thunderbird Assist, for its paid Thunderbird Pro services, but the Thunderbird Pro page currently lists Thundermail, Appointment and Send, so check the Thunderbird blog for its status. Community add-ons such as ThunderAI connect the message you are reading to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or a local Ollama model.

That is real control and real work: you pick the model, accept the add-on's data path, and keep it running.
