3. Gmail's own Add to Tasks button#

Open a message, click the three-dot menu (or the Tasks icon in the side panel), and "Add to Tasks" creates a task titled after the subject line, with a link back to the email pinned underneath it. It's free with any Google account and takes about two clicks.

The link is one-way and passive: it opens the email, it doesn't tell the task anything happened, and nothing extracts the actual commitment for you — you still write the task title yourself. There's no AI reading the thread here; it's a bookmark with a due-date field.

Google Tasks also lives in Calendar and the Gmail side panel, so if your whole workflow is already Google's, the task shows up everywhere you'd expect without installing anything. 5. Todoist's per-project forwarding address#

Email Assist, Todoist's parsing layer, will pull a date out of the text and clean the title up rather than leaving it as a raw subject line.

There's also a Todoist for Gmail add-on that turns the same idea into a sidebar button inside Gmail itself, if forwarding feels like one step too many — same one-way copy underneath, just a shorter path to it.

It's a genuine one-way copy — there's no link back to the email at all once the task exists, and Todoist confirms directly that email-to-task is gated to its paid Premium and Business plans, not available on Free.

Forwarding copies everything, not just the task

An email-in address copies the full message — attachments, CC'd colleagues, anything quoted below the fold — into a third-party app's storage. 8. Zapier or Make — the DIY route when nothing above fits#

If none of these match your stack — maybe your task tool is Linear, or your inbox is a shared alias — a trigger like "new email matching [label]" feeding an action in Zapier or Make will build the exact pipe you want, into whatever app you actually use.

It's the most flexible option and the least connected one: no vendor's AI is reading the thread for you, the round-trip is whatever you wire up yourself, and every automation platform in this category bills by the run or the task processed, so a busy inbox can get expensive in a way a flat-fee tool doesn't.

Building the automation well takes real setup time — a filter step so only emails matching a label trigger it, a formatter step to turn the subject into a clean task title — and every one of those steps is a place the pipe can quietly break without telling you. Treat it as the option for a workflow specific enough that no vendor built it for you, not as the default.
