How we compared them#

This is a documented-capability comparison, not a lab test. We checked each vendor's own pages in October 2026 against four questions:

• Where the filter runs: on the server before download, or in the client after.
• What it catches: obvious spam only, or cold outreach and newsletters too.
• Which accounts it handles: one Outlook profile, or several POP3/IMAP addresses.
• Windows fit: Windows 11 support and whether it depends on classic Outlook, which new Outlook replaces.

1. AI Emaily — an AI-native client that separates spam from cold outreach#

Pick this if you want a new client that cleans up a Gmail, Outlook or IMAP inbox and keeps cold sales pitches out of it. If you want to keep Outlook, skip to MailWasher or SPAMfighter.

AI Emaily scores every message on our servers as it syncs: SPF, DKIM and DMARC results, lookalike senders, scam language, deceptive links, risky attachments and sender reputation, with an AI second opinion only for borderline scores. Threats go to a Spam folder with a score and a plain-English reason, and one tap marks a message Not spam. Separately, a cold email filter scores unsolicited outreach for intent and lets you block it, batch it into a weekly digest, or allow it, per sender or domain. That second stream is the part a classic junk filter does not have.

Where it is not the right answer: it is not local or open source, it does not delete mail on the server before download, and it is a client, not an Outlook add-on. 2. MailWasher Pro — the pre-download POP3 and IMAP spam filter#

Pick this if a long-lived POP3 or IMAP address gets buried in junk. MailWasher Pro checks your accounts on the server, shows what is waiting, and lets you delete spam before it downloads into Outlook, Thunderbird or any other client. It handles unlimited accounts, and free MailWasher Mobile apps for iPhone and Android sync your friends list and blacklist.

Our concession: MailWasher is better than AI Emaily at previewing and deleting spam on the server before download. It is what the product was built for, and we do not offer it.

It is Windows only (built for Windows 7, 10 and 11). Firetrust offers a free version and Pro as a one-, two- or three-year subscription or a lifetime licence covering up to three computers. It does not replace your client and does little about cold outreach from legitimate business domains.

3. Spamihilator — the free POP3/IMAP proxy#

Pick this if you want a free filter in front of the client you already use. Spamihilator runs locally between your email client and the server, checks incoming POP3 and IMAP mail, and moves suspected spam aside for review. It works with Outlook, Thunderbird and most other clients, in 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds.

Its site lists version 1.7, released 4 June 2022, as the latest, and does not state Windows 11 support. For a home user with a stubborn POP3 address it is a reasonable free option; just do not expect its filter to keep pace with newer spam.

4. SPAMfighter — a free spam add-on for desktop Outlook#

Pick this if you want to stay in desktop Outlook and add a filter inside it. SPAMfighter describes itself as a free anti-spam tool for Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail, with a 30-day trial of the full version, plus separate business products such as an Exchange module and mail gateways.

Check two things before installing: its site shows Windows 10 and does not state Windows 11 support, and as a desktop Outlook add-on it needs classic Outlook, because new Outlook does not run classic COM add-ins. 5. Thunderbird — the free client with an adaptive junk filter#

Pick this if free and open source matter more than an AI layer. Thunderbird is a full desktop client (version 158 at the time of writing) whose adaptive filter combines a Bayesian algorithm with the training you give it by marking messages as junk or not junk. You can exempt senders in chosen address books, and it handles any number of POP3 and IMAP accounts on Windows 10 and 11.

Note the label: from version 145, Thunderbird renamed Junk to Spam in its interface, so older guides may not match your screen. The trade-off is that it does not separate cold outreach from spam, so you still sort that by hand.

6. Outlook (classic) — the built-in Junk Email Filter#

Pick this if you already use classic Outlook. Go to Home, then Block, then Junk E-mail Options (older builds show Home, then Junk). Levels are No Automatic Filtering (the default), Low, High and Safe Lists Only, plus Blocked and Safe Senders lists. On Microsoft 365 and Exchange accounts, Exchange Online filters on the server before Outlook sees the mail.

Two caveats. Microsoft says these steps do not apply to new Outlook for Windows, which has different junk settings. And Microsoft's known-issues page says some classic Outlook builds removed the filtering levels from Junk E-mail Options, restored them in October 2024, and may remove them again; if you do not see the levels, that is why. 7. eM Client — a polished client that leans on the server#

Pick this if you want a good Windows client and your provider's filter is already decent. eM Client's own blog says the mail provider does most spam filtering; in the client, a default spam rule moves messages the server has flagged into Junk, and a blacklist rule handles senders you block. It is not an adaptive filter of its own.

8. Mailbird — a Windows client that relies on your provider#

Pick this if you want a clean Windows client with chat and task integrations and do not need extra junk defence. We could not find a junk filter of its own documented by Mailbird, so plan on your provider's filter doing the work: if Gmail or Outlook.com misses something, Mailbird will not catch it.
