Start with Apple Mail's own junk filter: turn on Move it to the Junk mailbox and mark misses for a week. If the same senders still get through, add SpamSieve, a paid local filter that plugs into Apple Mail and trains on your mail. If you read the same account on an iPhone, use SaneBox, which filters at the account so every device sees the result.

That is the whole decision for most email spam filter Mac searches, and it comes down to one question: where should the filter live? A local filter on the Mac wins on privacy but does not follow you to your phone. An account-level filter follows you everywhere but means a service reads your mail headers. Yes. Apple Mail has a built-in spam filter for Apple Mail accounts of every kind, and it runs on your Mac. Apple's guide says the default settings catch most junk, but it tells you to check the filter is on, and the default action leaves junk in your inbox with a marker rather than moving it. Three steps fix that:

   In Mail, choose Mail > Settings, then click Junk Mail. Make sure Enable junk mail filtering is selected, and under When junk mail arrives choose Move it to the Junk mailbox.

We compared each tool on documented facts from its own site: where the filter runs, what it hooks into, what happens on your iPhone, what it is built to catch, and its packaging shape. 1. Apple Mail's built-in junk filter#

Apple Mail's filter runs on your Mac, learns from what you mark as Junk and Not Junk, and costs nothing beyond macOS. It is the right answer if your mail is mostly clean and you only want obvious spam out of sight. Set it up with the three steps above.

Two limits matter. Training stays on the Mac, so if you also read the account on an iPhone, the phone gets the benefit only when a message has actually been moved to the server's Junk folder. And it is not built for grey mail: newsletters and notifications you once opted into are not spam to any filter.

If your account is Gmail, Google's server-side spam filter has already done most of the work before Apple Mail sees the mail. Train Gmail by marking spam in the Gmail web app, so every device benefits, rather than relying on a second local layer.

2. SpamSieve#

SpamSieve from C-Command Software is the long-standing paid spam filter for Mac. It runs locally, trains continuously on your mail, and works with Apple Mail, Outlook, Airmail, MailMate, GyazMail and others listed on its site. Mimestream is not on that list. C-Command sells it as a one-time purchase after a 30-day, fully featured trial.

Buy it when Apple Mail's own filter keeps missing the same senders. Its training model and allowlist and blocklist controls go further than Apple's, and one copy can filter several mail clients on the same Mac. Its current requirements run from macOS High Sierra through the current macOS 27.

Where it stops: it is a spam filter, not a triage tool, so it will not sort newsletters or quiet notifications. It is Mac-only, and spam it catches shows up as gone on your iPhone only after the folder move syncs over IMAP.

3. Klar#

Klar is the free option for Apple Mail. It is an Apple Mail extension from the Mac App Store that classifies mail on the Mac with a local AI model, with no account and no cloud processing according to its own site. Because it works inside Mail, it covers any account Mail reads, including iCloud, Gmail, Outlook and custom IMAP.

The catches are hardware and maturity. Klar needs macOS 14 or later on an Apple Silicon Mac, so older Intel Macs are out. It is also far newer than SpamSieve, and we have not tested its accuracy, so treat it as a free first step before you pay for anything.

4. SaneBox#

SaneBox is not a Mac app. It is an account-level service you connect to Gmail, Microsoft 365, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail, AOL or any IMAP, Exchange or ActiveSync server. It sorts mail into folders such as SaneLater and SaneBlackHole, so Apple Mail on the Mac, Mail on iPhone and webmail all see the same result.

That cross-device behaviour is the reason to pick it over SpamSieve. If you re-file the same messages on two devices every day, moving the filter onto the account fixes it. For a Gmail user on a Mac this is often the honest right answer. Mimestream is a native macOS client built on the Gmail API, and its spam filtering is Gmail's own: Google classifies the mail on its servers before it reaches your Mac, and the decision applies on every device.

Gmail's filter is stronger than anything you can add to Apple Mail on the same account, so stacking SpamSieve on top is more likely to disagree with Google than to help. Mimestream is built for Google accounts only, so it will not help with iCloud, Outlook or Fastmail. It offers a 14-day trial, then a subscription.

6. HEY#

HEY from 37signals is a full email service, not a filter. Its Screener holds any first-time sender until you say yes or no once; after that, the sender is either let in or blocked for good. Bulk mail goes to The Feed and receipts to The Paper Trail.

It is the most opinionated answer here: only senders you approved reach you. The catch is that it means a new address, either @hey.com or your own domain on a separate plan, and the switching cost is telling everyone. There is a 30-day trial, then a subscription.

7. Clean Email#

Clean Email works alongside your current client. It groups mail by sender so you can bulk-delete and archive, unsubscribe in bulk, and set Auto Clean rules that handle future mail from a sender as it arrives. It has a Mac app on the Mac App Store.

8. SimpleLogin (alias service)#

SimpleLogin is prevention rather than filtering. You hand a site an alias instead of your real address, mail to the alias forwards to your inbox, and if the alias starts attracting spam you switch it off.

It works with any Mac client, because the filtering happens before mail reaches your account. It will not clean up mail already going to your real address, and it cannot stop spam sent to a leaked address. There is a free plan with a capped number of aliases and a paid plan for unlimited aliases.
