Gmail App Notifications for One Label Only on Android

To get Gmail app notifications for a specific label on Android, you change three settings in the app: keep the account's Email notifications on All, turn off notifications for the Inbox, and turn on Label notifications for the one label you care about. What does "Label notifications" mean in Gmail?#

Your inbox is treated as a label too. That's why the usual setup is to untick it for the Inbox (the Primary tab, if you use inbox categories) and tick it for one custom label. The result is a phone that stays quiet except when mail you've marked as important to you arrives.

The settings sit at three levels, and each one can cancel the one below it. This is where most confusion comes from.

Before you start#

• Create the label and the filter on a computer. The Gmail Android app has no filter editor, so the rule that applies your label has to be made at gmail.com. New labels can take a few minutes to show up in the app.
• Update the Gmail app from the Play Store. Menu names have shifted between releases, and the steps below match the wording Google uses in its help pages as of October 2026.
• Allow Gmail to send notifications in Android itself. On Android 13 and later, apps must ask for notification permission. If you denied it, go to Android Settings → Apps → Gmail → Notifications and turn it on. No Gmail setting can work around that.

How to set Gmail app notifications for one label on Android#

   In a browser, open Gmail and click Show search options at the right of the search box. Enter the sender, subject words or other criteria, and click Search to check what matches. Click Create filter, tick Apply the label, choose or create your label (for example "Notify"), and click Create filter again.

   In the Gmail app, tap the menu at the top left, then Settings, then your account. Under Notifications, tap Email notifications and choose All. Do not choose None or High priority only — either one stops your label alert from working the way you want.

   Turn off notifications for the Inbox

   On the same account screen, tap Inbox notifications and untick Label notifications. This silences everyday mail in your Inbox or Primary tab. If you've turned on alerts for other labels in the past, untick them under Manage labels too.

   Still in your account settings, tap Manage labels and then your label. Tap Sync messages and pick Last 30 days or All. Until the label syncs, Gmail won't let you turn on its notifications.

   On the label's screen, tick Label notifications. Tick Notify for every message if you want an alert for each new email rather than just the first one. Pick a sound here if your version offers it, or set one later in Android Settings → Apps → Gmail → Notifications.

   From another account, send an email that matches your filter. Check at gmail.com that the label was applied, then check your phone. If the label is there but no alert came, use the troubleshooting table below.

Do you need a filter, or is there a shortcut?#

For alerts from one person, you still need a filter, but it's a small one: put their address in the From field. To cover several people with one label, separate the addresses with OR, for example [email protected] OR [email protected].

There is one way to skip labels. Create a filter with the action Always mark it as important, then set Email notifications to High priority only. The catch is that Gmail also marks other mail as important on its own, so you'll get some alerts you didn't ask for. The label method is the only one that alerts for exactly what your filter matches.

A filter that uses Skip the Inbox together with Apply the label is a good pairing. The mail stays out of your inbox, and the label alert still tells you it arrived, because the alert follows the label rather than the inbox.

Can you get notifications for one label on iPhone or a computer?#

Not with Gmail's own settings. Per-label notifications are an Android-only feature of the Gmail app as of October 2026.
