There are two ways to stop LinkedIn emails in Gmail. The first is LinkedIn's own notification settings — turning specific email types off at the source. This post covers the second way: a filter on the Gmail side that works regardless of what LinkedIn sends. It is the right choice when you have already tried LinkedIn's settings and want a rule that outlasts future account changes, or when you want one solution that catches any LinkedIn email type without revisiting each notification toggle.

There is one important thing to understand before you start: Gmail's block-sender feature matches one email address at a time. LinkedIn routes bulk mail through several subdomains — @e.linkedin.com and @el.linkedin.com are the main two — and it rotates the local part of those addresses. Blocking one address stops that address only; the next campaign arrives from a different address on the same subdomain and lands in your inbox unchanged.

Settings-Side vs Filter-Side: Which to Use#

A Gmail filter acts after LinkedIn sends the email. Adjusting LinkedIn's notification settings reduces what gets sent in the first place, which is the cleaner fix. The filter approach makes sense in two situations. First, when you want to catch any LinkedIn bulk message regardless of how LinkedIn categorises it or whether it adds new notification types later — a domain-level filter catches new senders on the same subdomain automatically. Second, when you access your mailbox through a client where you cannot conveniently log in to LinkedIn to adjust settings.

One limit worth stating plainly: some LinkedIn messages — including certain InMail alerts — arrive from @linkedin.com rather than the bulk-mail subdomains. A filter targeting @e.linkedin.com and @el.linkedin.com will not touch those. How to Build the Gmail Filter#

The filter below targets LinkedIn's two main bulk-mail subdomains. Sign-in alerts, two-factor codes, and security emails from @linkedin.com are not in scope.

    Open Gmail Settings

    Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of Gmail and select See all settings from the dropdown.

    Navigate to Filters and Blocked Addresses

    Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab near the top of the Settings page, then click Create a new filter.

    Enter the From criteria

    In the From field, type: @e.linkedin.com OR @el.linkedin.com. Gmail matches any sender whose address ends in one of these domains. Do not include @linkedin.com here — that domain is where LinkedIn's security alerts and sign-in codes originate.

    Preview the results

    Click Search to see which messages already in your mailbox would match. Confirm the results are bulk LinkedIn mail — notifications, job alerts, campaign emails — and nothing you want to keep. You can also search from:(@e.linkedin.com OR @el.linkedin.com) in the Gmail search bar to preview the same set.

    Click Create filter

    In the filter dialog, click Create filter to move to the action selection screen.

    Choose the actions

    Check Skip the Inbox (Archive it). Optionally check Apply the label and pick or create a label called LinkedIn. Checking Never send it to Spam keeps matched mail accessible in the label view even when Gmail's classifier would otherwise route it to spam.

    Check Also apply filter to matching conversations to immediately move LinkedIn mail already in your inbox. Click Create filter to save.

Keep @linkedin.com out of the From field

LinkedIn sends security alerts, two-factor codes, and password-reset emails from @linkedin.com. Adding that domain to this filter archives those messages too. Restrict the filter to @e.linkedin.com and @el.linkedin.com only, unless you have a separate rule in place to preserve security mail.

How the Same Fix Works in Outlook and on Mobile#

Gmail filters created on the web apply to the Android and iOS Gmail apps automatically — no separate setup in the app. Outlook handles this through its Rules feature. The table below maps the approach across the most common clients.

When the Filter Does Not Catch Everything#

If a LinkedIn email reaches your inbox after the filter is active, check the actual sending domain. Open the message, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the email, and choose Show original. Find the From header and the Return-Path header — these show the real sending address, not just the display name.

LinkedIn's confirmed sending domains include @linkedin.com for account and security mail, @e.linkedin.com and @el.linkedin.com for bulk notifications and campaigns, and @cs.linkedin.com for customer support messages. If a slipped-through email came from a domain not in your filter, open Filters and Blocked Addresses in Settings and add that domain to your existing filter's From field using OR.

New LinkedIn notification types occasionally arrive on new addresses before the subdomain settles into a pattern. The filter already catches the two established bulk-mail domains; you only extend it when something new appears.

Why blocking a sender address does not work

Gmail's block-sender feature creates an exact match on one address. LinkedIn's bulk-mail senders like [email protected] can rotate the local part — everything before the @ — at any time. A new address at the same subdomain bypasses the block. A domain-level filter on @e.linkedin.com matches any address at that subdomain regardless of the local part, so a sender rotation does not reset it.
