How to Block or Stop Unwanted Emails in Yahoo Mail

There are three ways to block emails on Yahoo, and the first one works without opening the message. Pick the route that matches what you have in front of you.

• Type the address in: Settings > More Settings > Security and Privacy > Blocked addresses > Add. Best when you know the address but do not want to open the message.
• Block from an open message: click More (three dots) and choose Block senders, where your version shows it. Fastest when the email is already open.
• Filter on a domain or keyword: Settings > More Settings > Filters. Best for senders who rotate addresses, because a free account cannot block a whole domain.

How to Block Emails on Yahoo Without Opening Them#

This is the route Yahoo documents on its help pages, and the only one that lets you block an address without a message in front of you. It works in a desktop browser, which includes the browser on a phone (see the app section below).

   Open Settings

   Sign in to Yahoo Mail in a browser. Click the Settings (gear) icon and choose More Settings. In newer layouts, the More icon below your folders opens Settings instead.

   Select Security and Privacy from the left-hand menu.

   Under Blocked addresses, click Add, type the full email address, and click Save.

   Check or remove entries later

   Come back to the same screen to review the list or delete an entry. Yahoo allows up to 1,000 blocked addresses.

How to Block a Sender From an Open Message#

If the email is already open, the quicker route is the message toolbar. Click More (three dots), choose Block senders, optionally delete existing mail from that sender, and confirm. The menu label has changed between Yahoo Mail versions, so if you do not see it, use the Settings route above.

Block Sender Missing or Not Working in Yahoo Mail?#

• Look for Block senders under More (three dots) on an open message in the web version. If it is missing, add the address under Settings > More Settings > Security and Privacy > Blocked addresses instead.

Can You Block a Whole Domain in Yahoo Mail?#

Yes, but only with Yahoo Mail Plus. Yahoo's help page says domain blocking is currently offered only with Plus and allows up to 500 domains while the subscription is active. Free accounts block individual addresses only.

With Plus, open Settings > Security and Privacy, find the unwanted sender domains section, click Add, enter the domain and save. On a free account, use the filter below to catch every address at a domain.

How to Set Up a Yahoo Mail Word Filter That Sends Spam to Trash#

A filter runs as mail arrives, so matching messages skip your inbox. That makes it the right tool for senders who rotate addresses, and for any category you can describe with a word. Yahoo supports up to 500 filters and applies them from the top of the list down; if two filters match the same email, the higher one wins, and you can reorder them with the arrows above the list.

Yahoo's help page confirms filters can sort new mail into a folder or into Trash. The exact condition options and labels vary by version, so look for sender, subject and body conditions in your own filter screen.

   Go to Settings (More Settings in older layouts) and choose Filters.

   Click Add new filters and name it something you will recognise, such as Promo to Trash.

   For a word filter, choose the Body or Subject condition and enter the word or phrase you want caught. For a domain, use the sender condition and enter the domain text, for example @example-promo.com. That catches every address at that domain without Yahoo Mail Plus.

   Pick Trash as the folder. Matching mail goes straight to Trash, which Yahoo empties after 7 days.

How to Unsubscribe and When to Use Report Spam#

For newsletters and promotions from companies you once signed up with, unsubscribing is more durable than blocking. In Yahoo Mail, open the message and use Unsubscribe, or select the email, click More (three dots) and choose Unsubscribe. Yahoo sends the opt-out request for you when the sender includes one. In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act gives senders up to 10 business days to honor it, so a few more messages can still arrive.
