How to Stop Unwanted Emails on AOL Mail

If you want to know how to stop unwanted emails on AOL, you have three tools: a blocked-senders list that hard-stops specific addresses, up to 500 custom filters that route mail before it hits your inbox, and SpamGuard — AOL's built-in spam filter that learns from what you mark.

AOL Mail runs on the same platform as Yahoo Mail, so the controls work similarly — but the menus sit in different places. What makes AOL addresses a distinct problem is age: many accounts are 15 to 25 years old, and an address that old has ended up on far more marketing and data-broker lists than a recently created one. The controls below work. What they cannot do is instantly remove you from lists you were added to years ago. Before You Start: What Each Control Does#

AOL Mail gives you three layers of defence. They work best together rather than as alternatives.

**SpamGuard** is the automatic first pass. AOL's filters catch most spam before it reaches your inbox. You train it by marking messages as Spam or Not Spam — each signal adjusts how it handles future mail from that sender. The more consistently you mark unwanted mail as Spam instead of deleting it, the better the filter gets at intercepting similar messages.

**Blocked addresses** is a hard block on specific email addresses. Mail from a blocked address is deleted before delivery. The list holds up to 1,000 entries. Once you hit the cap, the block option may stop working silently — no error, the mail just keeps arriving.

**Filters** are rules you write. A filter can match on sender address, subject line, or keywords in the message body, then move the matching mail to a folder, delete it, or mark it. You can create up to 500 filters. They run in priority order from top to bottom, and the first matching rule wins — so put your most specific rules at the top.

How to Block a Sender in AOL Mail#

   Open the message

   Select the email from the sender you want to block. You can also add addresses manually through Settings without opening a message at all — covered in the last step.

   Click ••• More in the message toolbar

   In the toolbar above the email body, click the three-dot More menu. The exact icon label varies slightly between interface versions.

   Select Block senders

   A confirmation dialog appears. By default it offers to block all future emails and delete all existing emails from this address. Uncheck the deletion option if you want to keep messages already in your inbox, then click OK.

   Confirm or add addresses via Settings

   To verify the block was saved — or to add addresses without opening a message — go to Settings (gear icon, top right) → More Settings → Security and Privacy → Blocked Addresses. Type an address in the Add field and click Save.

How to Create a Filter in AOL Mail#

Filters are more powerful than blocked addresses when a sender rotates addresses but keeps the same domain, or when you want to route mail to a folder rather than delete it. A filter matching @newsletter.com catches every address at that domain; a blocked-address entry only stops one.

   Open More Settings

   Click the gear icon at the top right of AOL Mail and select More Settings from the dropdown.

   In the left sidebar of the Settings page, click Filters. Any existing filters are listed here in priority order.

   Give the filter a descriptive name — you will want to recognise it when you have accumulated dozens.

   Choose the field to match: From, To, Subject, or body content. Enter the matching value. To catch all mail from a domain, enter @exampledomain.com in the From field. AOL does not support wildcard characters, but a partial domain match works for this purpose.

   Select an existing folder or type a new folder name to create one. To delete matching mail automatically, route it to Trash.

   The filter activates immediately for new incoming mail. It does not retroactively move messages already in your inbox.

How to Report Spam to Train SpamGuard#

Marking a message as Spam does two things: it moves the message out of your inbox, and it signals SpamGuard to treat future mail from that sender more aggressively. This is more useful than deleting spam, which removes the message but teaches the filter nothing.

Select the message in your inbox and click Mark as Spam in the toolbar. On some interface versions this appears as a flag or stop-sign icon. AOL sometimes shows an Unsubscribe option alongside the spam button for recognised mailing-list mail — this is safe to use for lists you actually signed up for, and it removes you from the sender's list rather than just filtering future messages on your end.

If a legitimate message lands in Spam, open the Spam folder, select it, and click Restore to Inbox or Not Spam. This signals SpamGuard in the opposite direction and helps future messages from that sender reach you.

What to Do When Blocks Stop Working#

If you have blocked a sender and the mail keeps arriving, the most likely cause is address rotation. Bulk senders — whether aggressive marketers or outright spammers — send from one address until it gets blocked, then switch to the next. Blocking individual addresses is a losing race against a sender who automates the rotation across hundreds of addresses per domain.

Filters solve this because they can match a pattern rather than a precise address. If mail from @annoyingdomain.com keeps arriving regardless of the local part before the @, create a filter with the From field set to @annoyingdomain.com and route it to Trash. One filter handles the entire domain. You cannot do this with the blocked-addresses list, which requires an exact address.

The address-age issue is harder to close quickly. An AOL address that is 15 or 20 years old has been harvested from websites, included in purchased lists, and passed between data brokers many times. Blocking and filtering help, but the volume from old-address exposure takes time to fall.
