Connect AOL Mail
Connect your AOL Mail account to AI Emaily using the IMAP tab and an AOL app password.
AOL Mail does not have a one-click tab in AI Emaily. You connect it through the IMAP tab using an app password generated in your AOL account.
Before you start
AOL runs on Yahoo infrastructure, so connecting AOL Mail requires an app password rather than your normal login password. To generate one, your AOL account must have 2-step verification turned on.
Have your AOL email address ready, and be prepared to create an app password in the next step.
Paste an app password, not your login password
Create an app password
- 1
Open Account Security
Sign in to AOL, then go to Account Security in your account settings.
- 2
Turn on 2-step verification
App passwords are only available once 2-step verification is enabled. Turn it on if you have not already.
- 3
Generate an app password
Select Generate app password (or Generate and manage app passwords), and choose a name such as AI Emaily.
- 4
Copy the password
AOL shows a one-time app password. Copy it now. You will paste it into AI Emaily and will not be able to view it again.
Add it to AI Emaily (IMAP tab)
- 1
Open Add mailbox
In AI Emaily, open Add mailbox and select the IMAP tab.
- 2
Enter your email address
Type your full AOL email address (for example, you@aol.com).
- 3
Paste the app password
Paste the AOL app password you generated. Do not use your normal login password.
- 4
Confirm the server settings
Use IMAP host imap.aol.com on port 993 (SSL) and SMTP host smtp.aol.com on port 465 (SSL) or 587.
- 5
Save the mailbox
AI Emaily verifies the connection before saving. If the test fails, a hint indicates which setting is likely wrong.
Server settings
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| IMAP host | imap.aol.com |
| IMAP port | 993 (SSL) |
| SMTP host | smtp.aol.com |
| SMTP port | 465 (SSL) or 587 |
| Password type | App password (not your login password) |
Troubleshooting
- Authentication failed: you most likely used your normal login password. Generate an AOL app password and paste that instead.
- Cannot generate an app password: turn on 2-step verification first. AOL only offers app passwords once it is enabled.
- IMAP must be enabled: confirm IMAP access is allowed in your AOL Mail settings.
- Connection refused or times out: check the host, port, and TLS. Use imap.aol.com on 993 (SSL) and smtp.aol.com on 465 (SSL) or 587.
- Still failing after a password reset: changing your AOL password can invalidate old app passwords. Generate a new app password and update it in AI Emaily.
