What is an app password?

An app password (or app-specific password) is a long, single-purpose password you generate in your email provider's security settings. It lets one app — AI Emaily — sign in over IMAP/SMTP without ever seeing your real account password.

Most providers require an app password once two-factor authentication is on, because your normal password can no longer be used by apps. You can revoke an app password at any time without changing your main password or affecting other devices.

How connecting works: one-click vs app password

AI Emaily connects to your mailbox in one of two ways, depending on the provider — either through a one-click sign-in or with an app password.

One-click sign-in (OAuth): you approve access once on Google or Microsoft and they hand AI Emaily a revocable token. Nothing about your password is shared. This is what the Google and Outlook tabs do — and it's the recommended way to connect Gmail and Google Workspace.

App password: you generate a single-purpose password that authorizes IMAP/SMTP directly. This is how iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail, and every other IMAP provider connect. Gmail can also use this path as a fallback if you prefer it.

Either way, your mail flows over the provider's own encrypted connection — AI Emaily never bypasses Google or Microsoft security.
