Auto-categorisation

Mail sorts itself into Primary, Social, Promotions, and Updates on arrival.

A deterministic classifier runs the moment a message is synced, so your inbox shows only what you actually need to act on.

The four categories

Every incoming message is assigned to exactly one category: Primary, Social, Promotions, or Updates. The classifier runs server-side at sync time — there is no client-side processing delay.

Primary is the default inbox view. The other three categories each get their own folder in the sidebar; nothing is deleted or hidden, it is just organised.

CategoryWhat ends up hereSidebar location
PrimaryPersonal messages, direct correspondence, anything that doesn’t match the other threeInbox (default view)
SocialNotifications from social networks, dating apps, forums, community platformsSidebar → Social
PromotionsMarketing emails, deals, newsletters from commercial sendersSidebar → Promotions
UpdatesReceipts, shipping confirmations, bank statements, subscription notificationsSidebar → Updates

How the classifier works

The classifier is fully deterministic — it reads list-unsubscribe headers, mailing-list domains, transactional markers (order IDs, shipping labels), and promotional language patterns. No machine-learning model is involved in the standard categorisation pass, which means consistent, auditable results.

Signals are weighted: a message from a sender in your contacts with no list headers goes to Primary regardless of any other signals. A message with a List-Unsubscribe header from a recognised newsletter domain goes to Promotions even if the subject line looks personal.

Categorisation is not spam filtering

Auto-categorisation organises legitimate mail. Spam and phishing threats are handled by a separate server-side scoring step that runs before categorisation — see the Spam & phishing protection doc.

Recategorising a message

If a message lands in the wrong category, right-click it and choose Move to → [Category]. Aiemaily learns from the correction and applies it to future messages from that sender.

  1. 1

Right-click (or long-press on mobile) the thread

The context menu opens with triage actions at the top.

  2. 2

Choose “Move to” and pick the correct category

The thread moves immediately and is excluded from its previous category view.

  3. 3

    Confirm sender rule (optional)

A toast offers “Always put mail from [sender] here.” Accept to create a permanent sender rule.

What you see in the unified inbox

By default, the unified inbox stream shows only Primary messages. Social, Promotions, and Updates are accessible via sidebar folders but do not surface in the main stream unless you navigate to them.

Unread counts for all four categories are visible in the sidebar at all times, so you can see at a glance whether anything in Promotions needs attention without it cluttering your Primary view.

Show all categories in unified view

Settings → Inbox → “Include in unified stream” lets you add Social, Promotions, or Updates to the main inbox view if you prefer a single stream. Changes take effect immediately.
